I thought I had seen some workers in their a couple of months ago. This is the first time I’ve seen a for sale sign at this prime location at 1357 U Street. Seems like another bar has to go into this location right? It would be pretty sweet if it remained a live music spot. But I think anything would be an improvement as this building has been closed for way too long now…

How was your voting experience? Seems like everyone I spoke with said the polls were dead quiet.

As a kid in central Pennsylvania I came to DC for Museum field trips. In the early nineties, I commuted from Baltimore City to DC for over two years for grad school. I moved to the burbs and commuted in to downtown for work, and then finally, a few years ago, I actually came to live here.

Besides getting my Taxation without Representation license plates and my zone parking sticker, the defining moment, for me, of being an actual Washingtonian was showing up to vote as one. (I’ll save Jury Duty for another post, since I think my two years are up again soon.)

My polling place in Ward 5 is a high school down the street. Thinking I might write about the experience, I brought my camera. I came expecting to meet at least some enthusiastic supporters. I found none. The grass in front of the school had a few signs for candidates, but that was the extent of the hoopla. Given that it is not a year to pick a Mayor, and the precedence of the national campaigns, I suppose it’s not that surprising. I settled for taking pics of the red Voting signs.

Despite the light drizzle, there were some poll workers taking a break outside the front door. There seemed to be an abundance of poll workers. Although it was the middle of the day, I thought maybe some people would stop by during lunch. The last time I voted, it was in the morning, but after the start of the work day, and there was a long line of lively octogenarians. Today, there was no line.  Story continues after the jump. I’ve never seen an central air conditioner installed outside the home like this? Anyone seen something like this before?

This one seems to have a bit of a modern flavor. What do you think of the colors? Thumbs up or down?

Now take it easy everyone. This is the last entry. The next competition coming up will be the scavenger hunt in early October.

“My roommate Rachel is one of my best friends. Our brains are from the same jar and we share many thoughts, even being able to sometimes control others with the power of our combined minds. We only met last year but it feels like we’ve always been friends. Rachel is one of the most caring, loving and sweet people I know. She is one of those few people about whom one could honestly say loves others unconditionally. Rachel is an extremely calm presence in my life and makes me feel like less of a spaz than I actually am. She takes good care of me, especially making sure I eat well. We share an odd sense of humor that has us laughing between 95-98% of the time (there is a records joke in there, and she knows it.) Our neighbors probably think we should be committed. Rachel is always there to offer her excellent advice and she is someone I constantly turn to. She’s encouraging when I’m down on myself, consoling when I’m having a tantrum or some other ridiculous thing, and she kills scary bugs. She has the patience of saint to live with me and to indulge the habits of who I think anyone would consider to be a difficult person. I’ve never had a better roommate and surely never will.”

Fly opens this Saturday the 13th of September. There is both men’s and women’s apparel. It is located at 832 Shepherd right off of Georgia. Nice to get some business into those stores. I still haven’t seen any progress on the Nigerian restaurant that is supposed to open next door. But it’s great to get some business going on that strip. Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)
