We have discussed the astroturf stairs before, which I kind of dig. But I found some proper carpeted stairs this weekend. These I can’t figure out for the life of me. I mean people are aware of the elements, yeah? Doesn’t the carpet get all mildewed after some rain? What’s the thought process here?

I get this question fairly frequently. But I’ve been out of the rental market for a while now, so I thought I’d ask you guys. Before I moved to my house I lived in a great apartment building right next to the zoo at 2929 Connecticut Ave. I think the building pictured above at 3500 13th Street looks pretty sweet. But like I said I really have no idea these days. So do you guys know of any good apartment building for rent?

The flier for this house located at 1465 Florida Avenue, NW says,

“Great find in the USt corridor. Lots of original features , hardwood floors, separate dining room, pocket doors updated kitchen and systems, patio in the rear. 3 blocks to Green line metro, shops and restaurants.”

More details can be found here with a cool virtual tour.

Now this is another really good location but I’m guessing the house needs around 100k put into it to make it really nice. But I suppose you could do small projects piece by piece. So do you think $589,000 is a good deal or not given the location and the condition of the home?

We bid on a house on Delafield in Petworth. I work at 13th & K Street and wanted to know if you knew of carpools or the best way to get downtown. Any information would greatly be appreciated.”

Well, first let me say congratulations. Second, I believe there are types of folks, the bus folks and the metro folks. I happen to be a strong devotee of the metro. Now you are sort of between two metro stops – Petworth and Ft. Totten. Since you need to get to Farragut North, I’d recommend you take the Ft. Totten Metro which has the Red Line so you can shoot straight down to Farragut North without having to switch trains. I’m guessing you are probably a 15 minute walk to the Ft. Totten station so you may want to find out what the bus routes are so you don’t have to walk home when it’s too cold or too late at night.

So for those up in North Country – how do you get downtown?  Is there a bus near Delafield that’ll take you all the way downtown or would you recommend the metro?

I was lucky enough to get invited to a preview of the National Museum of Natural History’s newest exhibit on the ocean. Now, as some may know, I’m a huge tropical fish enthusiast so I was quite excited to check it out. The press material says:

“Taking over 5 years to develop, Sant Ocean Hall was created in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to show the ocean’s history and its importance in contemporary society. It is the only exhibition in the country devoted exclusively to a global view of the ocean.”

They have a terrific Web site that will give you a taste. The exhibit located at 10th and Constitution, NW opens to the public Saturday.

The space it self was completely renovated and filled with top of the line technology and exhibits. Pictured above you can see a replica of a north atlantic right whale named Phoenix. We were told there are only 400 living right whales today and the replica is of a living whale that was spotted only a few weeks ago. There were dozens of other exhibits and audio visual aids. The exhibits are divided into 12 distinct sections covering 23,000 square feet. One pretty cool feature was of a 24 foot giant squid preserved in a 1,800 gallon tank. There was also a cool 3-D “science on a sphere” globe that shows four narrated programs.

What I enjoyed most though was the 1,500 gallon Indo-Pacific coral reef aquarium.

If you want to learn everything there is to know about the Ocean then this is the exhibit for you. But just remember it’s not an aquarium. If you go in thinking you’ll find lots of fish you will be disappointed. I imagine this will be a great spot for thousands of 7th grade biology field trips. Lots of photos after the jump. (more…)

I had been tipped a few weeks ago that a new bar was coming to Georgia Ave. right near Moroni & Bros. pizza, but I had forgot all about it until I received an email last night inquiring about this space. I wasn’t able to speak to the owner but I asked some folks what the story was, so consider the following scuttlebutt. I’m told the space will be a bar and restaurant. The food may possibly be Indian but that is speculation. More speculation is that the space will open up soon, perhaps in mid-November. More to come as details emerge. Unless anyone knows some more details?

I saw this on a regular looking row house from an alley. I think it emits a light to alert on coming ships that they are approaching land. Personally I think this would be a sick spot for a cup of coffee…
