From a reader at 5:55pm:

“you should let your readers know there was just a running gunbattle after a wreck at 2nd and Ingraham just now.  looks like one car of thugs was chasing an SUV of thugs, the SUV struck several cars, hit a car crossing 2nd, flipped over, occupants of both cars bailed, and began a running gunbattle as they ran east on Ingraham and down the alley toward Hamilton.”

“Have you ever done a post about barbershops in the area? I want to find a reputable shop for my husband. He’s white(ish), which matters in the world of haircare.”

I feel like I may have but it must’ve been a long time ago because I can’t find it. I’ve been a super cuts devotee for a while but I really ought to try some of the local shops. So I’m also interested in what folks recommend. Any regulars of some local spots?  Does it really matter what race you are when it comes to barber shops?  I’d imagine that they are trained and can do good work regardless of your hair type.

This rowhome is located on 15th Street right across the street from Meridian Hill park. I know it’s not completed yet but I was struck by the angle on the pop up. It looks like it might be pretty cool. What do you think – too early to tell? If not, thumbs up or down?

This condo is located at 1435 Chapin Street, NW:

The flier says:

“WOW! New, never been lived in HUGE 1BR+den/1.5BA with parking!!! Just a 1/2 block to Meridian Hill Park and a few blocks to either U Street or Columbia Heights Metro. .. best of all worlds!! HWD floors, Silestone counters, Stainless Appliances, W/ D, SOUTH facing windows with LOTS of light & pet friendly! Become a part of the HOT U Street neighborhood!!!!”

More info and a virtual tour found here.

So this is a 2 bedroom 1.5 bath located fairly close to Meridian Hill Park and U Street. It’s got a very open layout. The asking price is $459,000. In addition to whether or not you think the price is realistic, what do you think of the condo itself?

Cafe Nema is located at 1334 U St. NW. Back in the day I sang the praises of their affiliated sports bar located upstairs. But I’m wondering what folks think about the original restaurant. How’s the food, atmosphere, etc.? Do they have a good brunch? Any particular specialties that are a must try?

I had the opportunity to meet with Councilmember Mendelson at his office in the Wilson Building last Friday afternoon. We spoke for an hour and a half about the problem of crime in DC. We discussed the complexity of the issue and ways in which the council can and can not solve the problem. I don’t consider myself a journalist. Rather, I wanted to meet with the Councilmember so I could express some of the anger and frustration a regular resident feels when crime, particularly violent crime, is all too frequent in many of our neighborhoods.

I asked the Councilmember what his impression was of crime in the city. He replied that as he is an at large member of the council he visits the whole city. He has witnessed crime firsthand and was even a victim himself many years ago. He stated crime is at an unacceptable level put as chairperson he doesn’t want to be alarmist. He also noticed that many crimes have actually gone down over the last year. Nevertheless, he did acknowledge that crime was indeed a big problem facing many of the District’s residents, “my belief is that crime is unacceptable and we don’t seem to be getting the bad people off the street.”

He expressed on a number of occasions that the issue of crime cannot be solved by the legislature (City Council) alone. He cited the 2006 Omnibus anti crime bill where “we had virtually everything prosecutors and police asked for”. Mendelson believes that what needs to be addressed is the issue of the revolving door where the bad guys get arrested but don’t end up in prison. He offers a variety of reason to explain this phenomenon: Continues after the jump. (more…)

Just received an email from Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham:

“Dear Friends, I have just returned from 14th and Columbia, where a short time ago shots were fired on the 1300 block of Columbia. An innocent bystander was sitting in her car, which was about to be parked, when a bullet penetrated the chassis and struck her in the leg.

The 1300 block of Columbia has been heavily patrolled with a squad car and a light tower present since Paul Jones was shot in January. (His alleged, barely 18 year old murderer was with this and another murder and is now in jail.)

Indeed, just last night, I attended a community meeting with MPD on the violence at 1300 block of Columbia.

However, another tragedy tonight–a fatal stabbing at Gresham and Georgia–led to the officer on the 1300 block being pulled to the location of that homicide. (There are very good leads, I am told in thta case.)

In the brief time that followed–when the police were not there, and the light tower was still dark–shots were fired and the person was wounded.

This has all the earmarks of more gang violence.

More information will be revealed as it becomes available.”

Good grief, it almost makes you want to weep out of frustration.  I do wonder why they couldn’t have left the light tower on?  It seems absolutely crazy.  Do you think the shooters were just waiting for the moment the cops were gonna leave?
