Just received an email from Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham:

“Dear Friends, I have just returned from 14th and Columbia, where a short time ago shots were fired on the 1300 block of Columbia. An innocent bystander was sitting in her car, which was about to be parked, when a bullet penetrated the chassis and struck her in the leg.

The 1300 block of Columbia has been heavily patrolled with a squad car and a light tower present since Paul Jones was shot in January. (His alleged, barely 18 year old murderer was with this and another murder and is now in jail.)

Indeed, just last night, I attended a community meeting with MPD on the violence at 1300 block of Columbia.

However, another tragedy tonight–a fatal stabbing at Gresham and Georgia–led to the officer on the 1300 block being pulled to the location of that homicide. (There are very good leads, I am told in thta case.)

In the brief time that followed–when the police were not there, and the light tower was still dark–shots were fired and the person was wounded.

This has all the earmarks of more gang violence.

More information will be revealed as it becomes available.”

Good grief, it almost makes you want to weep out of frustration.  I do wonder why they couldn’t have left the light tower on?  It seems absolutely crazy.  Do you think the shooters were just waiting for the moment the cops were gonna leave?

Sometimes I wish we could say the same for some of the neighborhoods in PoPville (see above).

Back in November we learned that the furniture store Room and Board had finalized the deal for this building. Some folks were a bit upset because the other alternative was the Tryst type spot, yoga space along with a comedy club. Now comes news from City Paper that they couldn’t finalize their financing.

By that point, Room & Board had offered, as a starting bid, $9.25 million to purchase the property. Then in December came devastating news from their bank, Milwaukee-based Associated Bank.

“Again we would have purchased it in December–the very end of the December–had we not been surprised by our bank,” he (Room & Board CFO Mark Miller) says.

But, realistically, all bets are off. His parting words to me:

“If you know of any properties for sale or for lease, let me know,” he says. “We need 25 or 30,000 square feet. We’d love an old building like 14th and T.”

The reader who sent me the link writes, “Let’s hope Constantine is calling his bank.” Constantine is the guy behind the initial Tryst type coffee house, yoga, and comedy spot idea.

What do you guys think – any chance the Tryst type option will reemerge? Or do you think this spot is likely to sit fallow for a while?

Wow, this is a really cool picture. The reader writes:

“Here we are at the steps of Sacre Coeur. The guy who took the photograph was really interested in what the shirt meant.”

Hmm, it never occurred to me – I wonder if the French may have a particular affinity for these shirts…

The Petworth chapter of the Friends of the Library had it’s second meeting this past Monday night. Among the things discussed were ways to raise money, secure members and resources, and work with the libraries wish list and needs. The meeting had a nice turnout, with 10+ people all full of ideas and ready to help out where needed.

The library is such a cornerstone of the community, always busy with patrons both young and old, so this will be a very important venture for us all! The next meeting will be Monday, March 930th at 6:30 at the library. We will be electing officers (Pres, VP, Sec/Treasurer), working on publicity and getting word out to the community, and a few initial fund raisers. We will have forms available there for any of you to become members of the group, or you can email me directly ([email protected]) for the word document/pdf version.

We look forward to a big group so mark your calendars and come support your local library :)

I saw this team removing graffiti from street signs on 11th Street. It looked like absolutely miserable work. They basically spray some god awful chemical on the graffiti and scrub like hell. I’m going to give props to the folks who perform what could be one of the most thankless jobs in the city.

I’ve gone on record with my weakness for bungalows…

What do you think about the stone columns and chimney on this one?

Back in September I did a quick update on this corner. But since then it seems a new developer has taken over. This is an old picture so I believe the fence is now down and there is more empty space.  Many thanks to a reader for tracking down this update:

“A new, big, permanent looking sign was put up today. It has the exact same plan as the previous signs but this one is from Sperry Van Ness. They specialize in condos and retail spaces.

I did some digging and found this http://www.svn.com/aspx/pws/Template2/default.aspx?TranID=71467.

It looks like they are still looking for investors. $3,000,000 for .18 acres of land plus building permits seems pretty steep to me.”

If you click on the link – what do you think about the rendering?
