“Near the northwest corner of 13th and Irving NW, there’s an air pump coming out of a rowhouse with a sign reading “Free Air for Bicycles”. Thought it was a cool neighborhood find if you haven’t already covered it.

The house is on 13th, next to the church that is located there for sale.”

Very cool. For those that missed it previously, here’s the church for sale.

This is from the bulletin board outside Columbia Heights Coffee on 11th Street. I like the fact that Kim is not limiting herself to only one service. I’m serious. So if anyone needs these services I hope you’ll hook her up.

This is something that has been bothering me for a while. I’ve mentioned that the bullet proof glass at the bodegas around town is a bit off putting but I can understand it a bit as the history has been a bit choppy and small businesses have a lot to loose. But I was totally perplexed at the bullet proof glass at the Petworth Post Office on 9th Street. I mean is that really necessary today? Is the fact that it’s a felony offense to rob a post office not enough deterrent? Do the employees really feel that threatened? Or is it just too expensive (or simple inertia has set in) to remove it? I’m honestly interested to hear what you guys think? Any one else offended?

I’m becoming a huge fan of Nestum23 photos…

He’s captured the great El West from Mt. Pleasant.

Submit your photos to the PoPville flickr pool here.  I understand not all folks like to join the pool so if you’d like to submit a photo you can also email me or tag your flickr photo “popvilledc”.

This condo is located at 1314 W Street, NW:

The flier says:

“NEW PRICE on this 1900’s row house, totally gutted and rebuilt into 5 condos. 2floor unit, back of building with 2 balconies, PARKING SPACE in rear, granite, stainless appl. package, flat screened hd tv, washer/dryer stack, kitchen bar with three stools. Access living/kitchen from 3rd fl & bedrooms from top floor or spiral staircase in unit. Condo fee $211 mo includes water. Walk to METRO.”

More info and photos found here.

Well, I definitely think this is a great location. The price was originally $419,900 but has now dropped to $389,900. Does this sound reasonable for a 2 bedroom 1.5 bathroom at this location?

The Mayur Kabab House is located at 1108 K Street, NW. Their Web site says:

“We are specialize in Indian, Pakistani kabab and curry cuisine. We provide catering for all the occasion like birth day, wedding and langer. for over 9 years, we have been providing quality service for each and every occasion in a pleasant atmosphere.”

So what’s a “langer”? But more importantly how’s the food?

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every Monday and Friday. So anything good happen to you this weekend?

The prime spot on 14th Street next to Vastu (just south of T Street) is slated to become a restaurant. Looks like it will be a restaurant called Massa 14.

Anyone know anymore details?

The Carvel shop on 14th Street in Columbia Heights in the Tivoli Complex is slated to become a deli! They should open sometime in April. I think a deli is a great addition. You?

Also I’ve been getting a number of emails about the progress of the wine bar, Room 11, slated to come to the corner of 11th and Lamont. I’ve been emailing one of the owners, Dan Searing, and he says things are rolling along nicely. I still do not know when the opening date will be but I suspect it’ll be sometime in the Spring. There were lots of folks working there when I walked by this weekend. From the outside you’ll notice a fence has been erected. I’ll update with more info as it becomes available.

“Hey PoP,

Any idea when street cleaning starts back up and we have to go back to moving our cars twice a week?”

From DPW:

Please be advised that daytime mechanical street sweeping will resume in scheduled, signed residential neighborhoods on Monday, March 23, 2009. Alternate-side parking restrictions in these areas will go into effect as well. Parking tickets, which carry a $30 fine, will be issued, beginning March 30, to vehicles parked during street sweeping hours in areas posted with “No Parking/Street Cleaning” signs.

Beginning March 30, parked cars also may be towed to allow the sweepers access to the curbside. Generally, parking is prohibited for two hours while sweeping is underway.

Department of Public Works street sweepers cover about 4,000 lane miles monthly, removing litter and pollutants by brushing them onto a conveyor system, which transports the material into a debris hopper. The sweeper also emits a fine spray of water to help control dust. Street sweeping is suspended during winter as the sprayed water can freeze on the street and cause dangerous driving conditions. DPW also sweeps commercial corridors year-round.

For more information about DPW’s street sweeping program, visit www.dpw.dc.gov.”

“PoP,

It looks like these guys are finally opening up;  I looked through the glass yesterday and they actually have furtniture in place.  Also they’ve updated their website, www.policydc.com; apparently they’re opening up on Monday.  Have you heard anything about upstairs?  There was supposed to be a Sushi Restaurant on the second level.”

I stopped by Policy (located on 14th and T Streets, NW) this weekend and chatted with executive chef, Brian Murphy.  Policy will not be opening on Monday but will definitely be open by the end of March.  I was given a brief tour and lots of progress had been made but I could certainly see a few more weeks of finishing all the details.   However, based on what I saw, it looks like it’s gonna be sweet.  There will be tables and booths on the first floor along with a bar.

The second level will no longer be a sushi restaurant.  It’s going to become a lounge type space that will be part of Policy.  There was a sweet graffiti artist commissioned to decorate the upstairs.  And in the warmer months the second floor will also offer an outdoor eating area.  You can see the menu at Policy’s Web site here – www.policydc.com.  I’ll update with more info and photos as they become available.
