Perhaps the owners of the house on 16th and T should look into this. But seriously, I’ve seen a few of these signs around town. Does anyone know how they work? My understanding is that the city will pay for some of your renovations. Is that right? If so, I’d say that’s a mighty fine perk of living in a historic district.

I thought this was an interesting combination of an old building contrasted with a more modern addition and new building. The buildings to the left is the Acacia Life Insurance Building house the law firm of Jones Day, located on the 300 block of New Jersey Avenue, NW (roughly). I think the glass structure in the middle looks fantastic. The new building to the right, I believe, is available for lease. So what do you think of the look?

Incidentally I had never visited the Japanese American WWII memorial:

More photos of the memorial after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

I was wondering if you had any information about an accident that occurred at about 8:15 this morning just off U St. I commute by bike from Park View down to Farragut every day, and as I was turning from V south onto 14th St., I passed by a cyclist who had been hit by an SUV. There was already a crowd of people there helping her, so I didn’t stick around very long, but she was lying on the ground not moving, and I’ve been worrying all morning that she was seriously hurt. If you know anything about the accident, would you mind posting? It would be a good opportunity to remind cyclists to stay safe as it gets warmer and more of us are out in traffic in the mornings.”

Anyone witness this accident and know what happened? Please stay safe out there.

“The FAB-U-LOUS 1200 block of 10th is a hidden treasure! This semi-detached 2BR/2.5BA top-2-btm renov is on a block w/ beautiful, well kept homes & great neighbors! LARGER than it looks w/ great light from N/S/E, high ceilings, wood flrs, gas fp, custom built-ins, stuctured wiring thruout, large MBR w/ tray ceiling, gorgeous kit w/ 3 windows, wine fridge, 2 Juliet balconies, slate patio & PARKING!”

More info and photos found here.

Well no doubt this a nice renovation. I’m also interested to hear what you think about the value of the new wiring (you can see in one of the photos). But this 2 bed 2.5 bath will not come cheap – $693,000? Is the renovation/location that good? Wow, I actually see that the status says, “Contingent (No Kick Out)”. So did they get a good deal?

First we learn the Raven was getting renovated and now this! In various posts here I’ve read a number of comments from readers expressing their frustration over the slow development on Mt. Pleasant Street so hopefully this will provide a useful outlet. If you can’t make the workshop Wed. night please leave your ideas in the comments section and I’ll be sure to forward to the folks from the Office of Planning. If you can attend the event I’m told – “this is NOT a meeting, but an open house where folks can drop in and give their opinions and ideas on how to improve Mount Pleasant Street.”

So how would you improve Mt Pleasant Street?

From a press release:

On Wednesday, June 17, 2009, the DC Office of Planning will hold a public workshop in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood of Ward 1. The purpose of the workshop is to obtain community input on revitalization and development priorities for the Mount Pleasant Street commercial corridor in order to shape a revitalization plan.

The workshop will be an open house and participants may drop in any time from 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm to give their input on various topics to include:

* Mount Pleasant Street Physical Enhancements
* Development Opportunity Sites
* New Economic Development (new businesses, retail)
* Assistance for Existing Small Businesses
* Promotion of Unique Neighborhood Character

The study area for the planning initiative includes Mount Pleasant Street from Park Road to the north down to Hobart Street to the south, as well as Lamont Street, Park Road and Irving Street from 16th Street to Mount Pleasant Street.

I got some good juice for ya. It seems the folks behind Marvin (14th and U) are becoming the Joe Englert (developer of many H Street, NE bars/restaurants) of the U Street neighborhood. The latest I’ve heard is that they have purchased the old Cue Bar located at 1115 U St, NW. I hear this spot will become a bar/dance spot.

Additionally I heard they purchased the vacant lot located right next door to Marvin on 14th Street just north of U. Not sure what that will become but I’m guessing it’ll be a bar/restaurant of some sort.

Good news?

“Dear PoP,

As you meander through town, have you seen a particular type of tag or graffiti that almost looks like contour drawings often done in art school? I have seen a few around town by the same artist (i think), but there is one that sticks out in my mind–it is outside of Cork on 14th st, but went up when that used to be Sparky’s. It is of two figures embracing, with a line that reads “over time things change”. By any chance, do you:

a. know what i am talking about?
b. have a decent quality picture lying around that you never posted (i checked the archives and it is not there)?
c. this is a stretch–know who the artist is or how i could do some amateur detective work to find out?”

I have definitely seen this artist. Above is the photo you mention. I’ve seen some of their work further south on 14th Street and actually all around town. Sadly I don’t know who the artist is. So I’ll consider this a post for stump PoP readers – will the artist identify themselves or does anyone know who this particular artist is?

Dog Taxi and I love to go for long runs around the city, but now that summer is here, its quickly apparent that sweat glands are superior to panting – Dog Taxi is starting to lag behind after the third mile. To compensate, I like to stop for her to get a drink of water and cool off for a minute. But often that brings me to a big challenge: doggy water locations in DC.

Here, Dog Taxi is drinking from the doggy fountain at Walter Pierce Park – the only dog-specific water fountain I know of. Other times, she’s colling off in random mud puddles or I run through Rock Creek, where Taxi loves to tackle Rock Creek ripples But I’d love to expand my running routes across town.

Where else might she lap up cool water on a hot day?
