With Eastern Market having its grand reopening this weekend, the next big thing for 7th and Pennsylvania SE is the redevelopment of the Hine Jr. High site. This is going to change the face of Eastern Market and Capitol Hill as we know it, and go a long way to the unification of Eastern Market and Barracks Row. DCPS closed Hine and the city will be leasing the property to the developer in a 99-year agreement.

The crop of proposals for the site was recently whittled to four, and the four developers have all been doing their best to inform and woo the neighbors.

I’m not an urban planning expert. I took one urban planning class in undergrad, and though I think I got a B, that was 15 years ago, and I don’t understand a lot of the terms that get thrown around in these discussions. (Particularly the really intense ones over at Greater Greater Washington – I love those guys, but I don’t know what the hell they’re talking about half the time!) So, with that caveat, here are my very brief overviews (with some help from GGW, EMCCA, the CityPaper, The Hill is Home, and CHAMPS) of the 4 plans.
Continues after the jump (more…)

Well this is super cool. I get a lot of emails from folks trying to get me to promote their products. So I was a little suspicious about this email from AllModern.com. Then I went to their site and was blown away. They’ve got an awesome selection of modern furniture, home accessories and lighting from pretty solid brands like Knoll, Blu Dot, Alessi, Blomus. Well, they were gracious enough to let me select a product to give away for one of my contests. As a self admitted lover of coffee and coffee spots I thought I’d give away this dope Alfi thermal carafe (obviously I had a price limit). I stupidly didn’t think to ask for something for myself so I may have to enter the contest as well…

Anyway, the contest will be open for two weeks. Take a photo of your favorite spot in DC for a morning cup of coffee. It can be a balcony, like I often feature, or a spot in your house, in a park, anywhere in DC. Send a couple of lines of text along with the photo to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com explaining why it’s your favorite. I’ll select three finalists and we’ll vote on a final winner.

A while ago I got a vague email telling me about potential plans for this space but I hadn’t heard anything else until this morning. And wow, are these interesting plans. The spot has been leased and will turn into Kindred Bar and Lounge. But it has a very interesting mission:

Have you ever found yourself wondering why that bottle of Miller Light at the bar costs the same as a six-pack at the liquor store? Or, why you have to pay so much more for a martini that only takes a minute to shake when you’re at home? Well, the answer to those questions is pretty simple: Bars charge more than liquor stores because they have to pay more overhead: opening costs, renting a space, paying employees, and interest on bank loans. When you do the math, it all adds up.
These are hard times, and most of us are having to cut back on outings to bars and restaurants. Or, maybe we now find ourselves only going to places with specials.

Here’s where KINDRED Bar and Lounge comes in. My goal in launching this unique and inclusive tavern is to provide everyone with a great space and great prices. I’m not trying to get rich quick, or to open up a chain of KINDREDs across the country. What I am trying to do is simply to pool our resources to create a space that saves us money, brings us together (with inexpensive drinks!) and ultimately provides a unique space for the community — for us.
I can only do this with your help.

What a cool idea. The idea is the brainchild of Nikisha Carpenter. You can read more info and more importantly donate here. Think it’ll be possible to raise the dough during these tough times?

Thanks to Jaime for letting me share the photos he took of his home renovations. He writes:

“The last 7 pictures are the “after” ones. Before that are some of the house in the process of being sanded, and at the top of the set are pictures I took before I bought it, showing the original floors. The work was done by Universal Floors and cost about $3,000 for everything. It took them about three and a half days from start to finish to do the work.”

I think it came out great!

I notice this a lot in my backyard as well, I see something new growing every Spring and I can’t remember if it was planted or is just a weed.

I’m pretty sure the one photographed above is a weed but it’s pretty wild how it’s growing out of the window sill.

I think this is my favorite house in Adams Morgan. It’s kinda got an Italian villa vibe.

The Socialist bookstore (I think it was called Pathfinder) located on Georgia Ave just north of the Petworth metro has moved and a new bookstore is coming to the spot. Has anyone ever heard of Sisterspace? Ah, here’s their Web site.

It seems those wreaths are seriously well guarded so it looks like they’ll have many more months of glory…
