“Please take a look at the southeast corner of 7th St and Q Street NW…an abandoned liquor store has sat there for years.”

And while we’re looking at abandoned old liquor stores I’d also like to nominate one on the corner of 9th and U Street, NW:

These are both prime properties that one only hopes will be fixed up soon. I really hope they are being taxed at the vacant rate…

Your caption in the comments and the winner announced Friday. If there is a particular caption you really like, let me know and I’ll pick a reader winner as well.

4th and Florida Ave, NW

I’ve been getting a few emails about this great old property that we’ve looked at in the past. It seems the same person sent me a question that was also sent to DC Metrocentric. They report:

“The building itself dates back to 1898 and the work you may have noticed going on over the last few days is to bring the stone work and windows into compliance with Historic District requirements.”

The detail really is incredible:

It’ll be great to see it restored.

Lots going on here. I think I like the frame a bit better than the actual door. What do you think – thumbs up or too much going on?

“Dear PoP,

I wanted to nominate my neighbor in Mount Pleasant, whose garage deck I admire from my window every day. They have a detached garage on top of which they have built an amazing deck/cabana/outdoor space that really must be seen!

To check out the most spectacular and ingenuous spot they have created, you have to come through the alley behind the house, which is accessible by 19th St between Lamont St. and Kenyon.”

I hope this is the one. I was wandering up and down the alley and this was the coolest detached garage set up I saw. Definitely a sweet morning coffee spot.

This is a cool house located at the intersection of Woodley Road and Klingle. It’s a bit unusual because I’ve never seen a roof deck on a house like this. It’s also got a great garden going on.

From an email:

“Mid City Yoga, my guerrilla yoga company, is hosting a fun, summer outdoor yoga class every sunny (read: not rainy) Tuesday evening at 7pm in Thomas Circle. The 75 minute class will be an open-level flow, aimed at challenging experienced yogis and giving some experience to novices, all while enjoying the gorgeousness that is a DC Summer. I’ll be teaching, so come ready for a little bit of fun, a little bit of sweat, and some darn good company. The whole thing is pay what you can, so don’t stress– come play.

Thomas Circle is located on 14th Street NW, right at M Street and Mass Ave. The big horse statue is hard to miss. I’ll be the tall blonde guy with a yoga mat. 7pm.”

We were saddened to learn of Moojo Ken’s closing. It seems next door neighbor Habitat will be moving into the space. I’m not sure if Habitat is expanding or will vacate its current space. Stay tuned…

Wow, I think this looks awesome. Though I’m an admitted lover of fire escapes. It is located behind the 1700 block of Williard St, NW.

Photo of the front of the building after the jump. You’d never guess it looked so cool in the back. (more…)

“This is our little mutt puppy, Quinn. We think she is parts dachshund, beagle and terrier.”

Oh wow, maybe I should make puppies a separate category?

“Meet Ike. Ike has thumbs. Actually Ike has six toes (and claws) per paw. He’s fierce and cuddly. He was adopted from the ASPCA in New York City. Ike had been rescued from a magazine store basement, then adopted, then returned, then adopted again – by me.

Ike lives in Columbia Heights on Irving Street. He likes to play with his cat nip Arnold Schwarzenegger doll and grip things with his thumbs, like forks, iPods, Blackberries and wine glasses.

Ike should win. He’s definitely the coolest pet in all of Washington, DC. Two cat thumbs up.”

“Rusty Russell (Part Yorkie – Part Chihuahua – ALL love)”
