I’ve been noticing lots of swastikas in the U Street area along 14th Street. This is the third week in a row I’ve spotted swastikas. Normally I’ve seen them on their own. This one about Cuba is just plain bizarre. I guess there a lot of insane people out there.

Hmm, this is odd. At least the owner could have left a bowl of water as well. This garbage can is tethered to a tree in the front of someone’s house. Maybe someone was finally pushed over the edge after one too many garbage can thefts?

Incidentally, on Friday when I went to put my own garbage can back in my yard, I was initially disturbed to find it missing. I was incredulous that someone had stolen my garbage can. So, I’m walking all up and down my alley to see if it had been misplaced because it has huge house numbers spray painted on. But no, I couldn’t find it. So I finally give up and go into my yard and lo and behold it was there. Wild! In all the five years that I’ve been taking my garbage can out in the alley it has never been put back in my yard. Which makes sense because there is a fence. So, it kind of freaked me out a little bit. Maybe a really nice neighbor put it back? There’s no way the garbage men but it back right?

This sign has been up for well over a year. But I didn’t see a for sale sign near the house. Unfortunately I didn’t have a transistor radio with me at the time either. So, is a talking house a sales pitch or something else?

They really knew how to make signs back in the day. So what is Lionel Trains? Was it a lock store that also sold trains? This is located on 14th Street a few blocks south of P.

Once again for the expats: You can really see the building starting to rise up. It’s still hard to imagine what 8 stories will ultimately look like but it is very exciting.

From an email I received:

Victims of the fire at 3145 Mount Pleasant Street have been relocated to the Best Western Hotel on South Capital and I Streets SW through Saturday night. City officials and community workers are helping to find semi-permanent housing for the displaced tenants until the building is refurbished and they can move back in. We’ve been in close contact with Yasmin Romero at the tenant association and other workers orchestrating relief efforts. Below are the latest needs – Yasmin and the other tenants are incredibly grateful for the outpouring of support from the community: (more…)
