From CM Jim Graham:

The United States Attorney has brought criminal charges against known gang members that will break up one of the most entrenched and violent gang wars in Ward One, and possibly the entire city.

The charges are against seven members of the gang operating on the 1400 block of Girard St NW on some 80 counts of murder and conspiracy. They include homicide charges for the murders of three rival gang members, all of whom were Ward One residents. The murders occurred between January 2009 and September 2010.

The shoot outs between the gangs involved have brought great harm and fear to Ward One residents for many years.

These indictments send a powerful message that we are determined to win this tough battle against entrenched gangs and the violence they produce.

Our sincere gratitude to the United States Attorney’s Office, the Metropolitan Police Department and all other agencies for bringing their full investigative powers to bear on this battle for turf and drugs. And to all city agencies and community organizations who are also on the front lines and work to help mediate gang beefs and divert gang members to more positive livelihoods – – keep up your efforts – – re-engage with those who need your help – – don’t give up.

Finally, I want to thank Laura Norton Amico and Homicide Watch, for breaking this story. The link to Homicide Watch is provided here.

From WMATA:

With nearly 50 arrests in November, the Metro Transit Police Department’s new Crime Suppression Teams are sending a message to would-be criminals: The next person you try to rob may be a police officer.

The Crime Suppression Team program was launched in late October with team members targeting bicycle thefts and snatch robberies. Using decoy bicycles and electronic devices, plain clothes officers make immediate arrests as thefts and robberies occur on the Metro system.

In November, the Crime Suppression Team recorded 47 arrests for snatch robberies and bicycle theft. In addition, team members have made separate arrests for assault, drug and weapons possession.

“During the holiday season we traditionally see an increase in robberies. Our Crime Suppression Team has been doing a great job in addressing robberies and keeping our customers safe,” said Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn. “But we need our customers to do their part too. High-end electronics like smartphones and tablets are attractive to thieves. Don’t make it easy for thieves to take them out of your hands.”

Chief Taborn emphasized the importance of remaining aware and alert at all times, and keeping electronic devices and other valuables where they are not easily seen or reached. Customers who are using their electronic devices also are encouraged to avoid sitting or standing near train or bus doors as thieves often snatch a victim’s property and exit the train or bus as the doors are closing.

To report suspicious activity within the Metro system, call Metro Transit Police at (202) 962-2121.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
