Tom, DC legend, again, knows what’s up

From the Mayor’s Office:

“In anticipation of forecasted snowfall on Sunday, January 19, Mayor Muriel Bowser is deploying the District Snow Team tonight. At midnight, pre-treatment brine operations will begin on all snow emergency routes, including the National Highway System.

The National Weather Service is forecasting snowfall to begin on Sunday morning between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. and to continue throughout the day with the potential for several inches of accumulation. Temperatures are expected to drop throughout the weekend, with the potential for single-digit wind chill temperatures on Monday, January 20.

The snow team will engage in a full deployment on Sunday, consisting of 136 heavy plows (six- and 10-wheel dump trucks) to treat highways, streets, bridges, ramps, and other elevated structures, and 82 light plows (pick-up trucks) to treat smaller streets. In most cases, the Snow Team can begin plowing once there is approximately two inches of accumulation. Bike lanes across the District are serviced by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT).

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) does not collect household trash and recycling on federal holidays, including Monday, January 20, which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Trash, recycling, and food waste collections will “slide” for the remainder of the week into Saturday, January 25. For example, households that normally receive trash and recycling collections on Monday will be serviced on Tuesday.

While most collections are back on track after last week’s delays, DPW is aware that some households have not yet received collection and is working to reach those areas. In some cases, DPW is deploying teams to remove snow and ice from alleys that have not yet been serviced. If your household has not yet received collection, please report the missed collections to 311.

Leaf season remains on operational pause due to the use of leaf personnel to address snow operations.

Residential and commercial property owners are encouraged to spread abrasives (e.g., salt, pet-friendly deicer, or non-clumping kitty litter) on their sidewalks before precipitation begins to reduce the possibility of icing and to prevent slips and falls.”
