Dear PoP – Padlocks Mystery Solved?

Back in the day we talked about and had a reader question about padlocks on a chainlink fence:

“I was participating in the DC Servathon this weekend and came upon a chainlink fence off of Georgia Ave, by the Howard U Gadget Center (Gresham-ish cross street), with several padlocks on it. Being a silly suburbanite, I assume that they mean something. Do you know what these locks mean, if anything?”

We speculated about many reasons but the reader just sent me an update:

“I don’t know if you remember this conversation some months ago, but I think I found a prospective answer. This flickr blog popped up on my feed this morning. What do you think?”.

It says:

“According to Wikipedia, Love padlocks are a custom by which sweethearts affix padlocks to a fence or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Most common place of Love padlocks are railings of the bridges. It is suggested that the custom of ‘locking a padlock and throwing away the key’ probably originated in China.”

You can see more cool examples from flickr here.

What do you guys think – is this an example of love padlocks hitting DC?

On a side note – after the jump see how this lot has majorly transformed.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
