Where to get rid of old VHS tapes?

“Dear PoPville,

In my effort to “Marie Kondo” my condo, I have a sizeable collection of VHS tapes to donate or dispose of. I’ve got a little bit of everything, ranging from classic films to modern movies to workout videos, all family-friendly and on VHS. I know I can’t just chuck these things in the trash, but I also can’t let them continue to clutter my shelves either.

Enter PoPville! Does anyone know of a SPECIFIC place or organization in the DC metro area (besides Goodwill) that will accept these old VHS tapes? In theory, I could see these getting a second wind in some nursing home, library, shelter, etc. — but I don’t actually know who/where to pass them along to in practice. If I can’t find a new good home for them, I at least need to know how to safely dispose of them (since you can’t just send these to trash or recycling due to the chemicals they can leach). So I’ll take ideas for environmentally-friendly disposal as well! Thanks in advance.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
