Free in DC: Things to do Tonight – Sunday! 6.17.10 – 6.20.10

Hello PoP fans, It’s Amy from Free in DC with a list of great free and low cost events happening tonight and throughout the weekend.

Tonight…

After work today you can stop by Farragut Square Park for Free Live Music or head over to 16th & L St for Third Thursday Art Event at WVSA ARTiculate Gallery from 5:30-7:30pm. Tonight is also the monthly Mid-City Third Thursday where you call stroll along 14th St and the U St Corridor for some evening shopping and promotions. Most shops stay open til 8pm, some stay open a bit later. Stop by Mid City Caffe, just above Miss Pixies, for a Free Coffee Cupping at 6:30pm and share your opinion about which of the coffees you’d like to see them feature next month. After checking out the shops, you can also stop in for some Live Jazz at 1905 near U St starting at 9pm every Thursday.

Over on the H St Corridor tonight you can stroll through participating art galleries for ARTventures on H St from 5-8pm and also be sure to swing by the H St Kiosk Discussion & Open House at 13th & H St, NE from 4-8pm. Also tonight, The Writer’s Center in Bethesda, hosts “Story/Stereo” a Free Poetry & Music event at 9pm and the Free Outdoor Movie Series at the Capitol Riverfront continues this week with Family Night featuring the film Shrek at 8:45pm.

During the day this weekend…

BuddhaFest runs all weekend at American University with workshops, meditations, a picnic and film screenings, some of which are free and many under ten dollars. Free Community Yoga at Stroga in Adams Morgan from 10:15am – 11:45am, all donations go to the Capital area food bank. Saturday is also the last day of  Digital Capital Week and there will be a free panel on Fashion and Technology from 2- 3pm. During the day on Saturday you can also head over to Biagio Fine Chocolate on 18th St. for their June Sample Day with their new neighbor, A.M. Wine Shoppe, for a Complimentary Wine and Chocolate Tasting from 3-6pm. On Saturday from 5-7pm you can also enjoy some Live Bluegrass Music at the corner of 18th & Columbia in Adams Morgan.

Lots of fun stuff happening on Sunday from “La Festa Italiana” 12th Annual Italian Street Festival near Judiciary Square Metro, 11:30am-5:30pm to the “Flash Picnic” on the Mall from 1-2pm. You can enjoy Live Music at Eastern Market every Sunday from 10:30am ’til about 2pm or escape the heat with indoor screenings from the Beat Memories Film Series at the National Gallery of Art starting at 2pm. This weekend is Poetry Book Release Party on Rooftop in Columbia Heights from 4-6pm, $3 suggested donation, and is a Free Community Yoga at Quiet Mind every Sunday from 4-5pm.

At night this weekend….

Friday night there are two art openings that look great, one for the Sparkplug Collective Art Opening at the DCAC in Adams Morgan from 7-9pm and another Art Opening for “DECOY Ink” at The Fridge near Eastern Market along Barrack’s Row from 6-10pm. Every Friday night this summer you can also enjoy “Jazz in the Garden” outside in the NGA Sculpture Garden from 5-8:30pm and a Free Outdoor Film Screening in Rosslyn at dusk. This Friday from noon – 6pm is also a Free Community Cookout on Allison St at Georgia Ave. You can also hear the talented Chi Chi Glass and Petronila Robles Izquierdah on cajon, piano and vocals at this Friday’s Sounds of Hope benefit concert at The Potter’s House, all donations this week go to the Latin American Youth Center.

Saturday is the Fete de la Musique Annual Festival at the French Embassy starting at 4pm with family friendly events and running into the evening for adults. The festival will include live music, DJ’s and more and will go til midnight, admission is $8, kids ten and under free. Saturday evening, Sulu DC hosts their June Show this Saturday starting at 7pm at Almaz at 12th and U St, note there is a $10 cover, $8 for students. You can also swing by to check out the Art Opening at Irvine Contemporary on 14th St for the new show featuring works by Alexa Meade and Robert Mellor from 6-9pm and also stop by Hamiltonian Gallery on U St for the Opening Reception from 7-9pm. This is the last art show they will be hosting that will feature works from their first group of ten Hamiltonian Fellows that have been in residence. On Sunday night you can enjoy the weekly “Seed the Sound Sundays” with live music at BloomBars in Columbia Heights from 8-10:30pm.
