If you are looking for things to do this weekend that are fun and inexpensive, check out these low cost and totally free events from Free in DC!

Highlights for Thursday, May 20th – Sunday, May 23rd

Tonight…
Happy Thursday everyone! Lots going on tonight to choose from. Stroll through the gardens and enjoy “Dumbarton at Dusk” with a guided house tour that begins at 6pm for $5, free for students with ID. The first ever LitArtlantic, a free three day arts extravaganza, kicks off tonight at 8pm with “Story/Stereo” an event that includes music, poetry & fiction. Biagio hosts another Complimentary Chocolate Tasting with Fleurir tonight from 6:30pm – 8pm. The Fiesta Asia Film Festival is also screening two films tonight from 6:30pm – 10pm, free with RSVP.

Friday during the day….

A few things worth mentioning happening tomorrow during the day. The Third Annual Food Tasting & Fundraiser for the Capital Area Food Bank takes place at the Verizon Center from 11:30am – 1:30pm, six samples from local restaurants for just $12. Also, you can enjoy some Free Vegan Ice Cream at the corner of Conn & K from Noon – 1pm. This Friday from 12:15 – 1pm you can also enjoy a free performance with Music for Harp and Organ by Handel, Mozart and Dupre at the National City Christian Church in Thomas Circle.

During the day this weekend…

LitArtlantic hosts free events during the day, including a literary panel discussion at noon on The Writer’s Life followed by a Young Songwriter’s Showcase at 1pm with performances from three area musicians and a Children’s Theater Workshop at 2pm with Round House Theater at The Writer’s Center in Bethesda right near the metro. You’ll also have a chance to Connect with 25+ Arts Organizations at The Hive from Noon – 4pm as part of LitArtlantic at The Writer’s Center. Saturday is also the last day of DC Yoga Week, which has been offering free and $5 classes at various studios throughout the city. I just learned that Stroga, the new studio in Adams Morgan, is offering a Free/donation based Saturday Morning Yoga Class from 10:15am – 11:45am. Saturday morning from 9:30am – 10:30am you can enjoy a free tour with WalkingTownDC in the East Village of Georgetown. Take a mid-day break indoors with a Free Film about Chopin at The National Gallery of Art from 2pm – 4pm.

All day Saturday, from 10am-7pm, you can stroll along Pennsylvania Avenue enjoying foods, arts and crafts from Asia at the Annual Fiesta Asia Cultural Festival which will include a Bollywood Flash Mob, Bellydancers and more. Mix and mingle with 27 Mid City Artists at their MCA Open Studios this Saturday and Sunday from Noon – 5pm. On Sunday during the day, you can check out the new Beat Memories Photo Exhibit at the National Gallery of Art and attend a Lecture about the Exhibit and a Book Signing for Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg at 2pm. Sunday from Noon-3pm you can enjoy a free Indian Meal with “Karma Kitchen” and continue with the good karma by enjoying a Free Community Yoga at Quiet Mind in Columbia Heights, offered every Sunday from 4pm-5pm.


At night this weekend…

This Friday night The Writer’s Center hosts two free events as part of LitArtlantic, including a panel discussion with artists on Creativity Crossing Borders
at 7:00pm with local progressive hip hop artist Christylez, 9:30 club founder and artist Bill Warrell, Askia Muhammad and Amy Souza. After the panel they will be hosting a Free Film Screening of Romantic Warriors along with the filmmakers. Donations collected at this week’s “Sounds of Hope” concert, held in Adams Morgan at The Potters House, supports girls in Kenya. Ebenezer’s Coffeehouse near Union Station hosts their Monthly Free Music Open Mic this Friday from 7:30pm – 10pm and Hillyer hosts their monthly Poetry Open Mic, HOME, with feature Gowri K at their gallery in Dupont Circle from 6pm -9pm, free for poets performing $5 general.

Saturday night will be buzzing along 13th St in Columbia Heights when local artists open their homes to share their art and perform as part of the Columbia Heights Spring Art Salon from 6pm – 10pm. As part of the Salon event, BloomBars will also host special events at their space on 11th St. You can also head over to Gallery Plan b for their opening on Saturday from 6pm-8pm. Every Sunday evening you can go to hear Free Classical Music at the National Gallery of Art at 6:30pm or head over to IMCW Meditation at All Souls at 6:00pm, dhana, donation, based.

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
