Councilmember Robert White: “I’ll be at the inauguration – here’s why”

Watch: Why I will be attending the inauguration on Monday.

From an email blast:

“I want to take a moment to share why, despite my personal feelings, I have decided to attend the 60th presidential inauguration as a councilmember representing Washington, DC.

In politics, we all know that sometimes your side wins, and sometimes your side loses. That’s the nature of democracy. The incoming president holds deeply different views and values from mine, and I believe his leadership could harm the people and institutions I love and respect. Frankly, I would rather be anywhere else on Inauguration Day, which coincides with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

However,

leadership isn’t about doing what’s easy—it’s about putting the greater good ahead of personal discomfort. I cannot risk the incoming president feeling slighted by DC and taking that out on the city I serve and care deeply about. For this reason, I’m answering the call of duty, despite the emotional toll.

I’ve shared a video with more details on my decision, which you can watch here.

Sincerely,

Robert

P.S. Please feel free to reach out with any questions or thoughts you may have. Your feedback is important to me.”
