“Dear PoPville,
Since the most recent opening of the new traffic pattern at Florida and Rhode Island NE, traffic has increasingly been worse on Florida, backing up to First St NW.
Has anyone else experienced this? So much for taxpayer money and a 3 year+ project. And now there’s not even a Wendy’s to stop at when you’re stuck in traffic!”
From DDOT:
Updated April 2024
“The Florida Avenue NE and New York Avenue NE Intersection Project was designed to enhance all modes of transportation and improve overall safety by adding two-way traffic to First Street NE, restoring two-way traffic on Florida Avenue NE, adding protected bicycle lanes, improving pedestrian connectivity and vehicular flow, and reducing driver confusion.”

“Final Design
The Final Design was shared at a virtual public meeting on November 15, 2021. DDOT shared updates that have been made in response to comments throughout the design process. As shown in the image below, the project will now extend the Protected Bicycle Lanes (PBLs) on First Street NE from M Street NE to N Street NE, providing continuous PBLs from Union Station through the intersection. Additionally, the project will upgrade the existing painted bike lanes on Eckington Place NE to PBLs adjacent to the curb from Florida Avenue NE to R Street NE. The three new public open spaces are an integral part of the project; DDOT will construct these park spaces at the same time as the intersection safety project.”
