From a press release:
“The Mendelsohn family of Sunnyside Restaurant Group announce the reopening and new location of Santa Rosa Taqueria. Located on Capitol Hill at 301 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE, blocks away from its original location, the Mexican restaurant will have a new look with menu favorites and additional items curated by Chef Brian Lacayo and Catherine Mendelsohn. Opening is expected in late winter, 2022.
A passion project of Micheline and Catherine Mendelsohn, who have dedicated their expertise in design, atmosphere, and menu items to Santa Rosa Taqueria, this neighborhood favorite will reopen with a modern and airy esthetic. The restaurant’s menu will feature contemporary interpretations of classic Mexican dishes, a wider selection of margaritas and specialty beers on tap for an emphasis on happy hour offerings. Slated for a late winter opening, Santa Rosa 2.0 will be a two-level restaurant with 60 seats inside as well as an expansive 60-seat patio. Brian Lacayo, long-term consulting chef with Sunnyside Restaurant Group, will oversee the kitchen with creative authority alongside beverage director and mixologist, Gina Chersevani.
“The last two years have been some of the most challenging for us and our industry and we’re just excited to open our doors again,” said Deputy CEO, Micheline Mendelsohn. “Our goal is to be a welcome gathering spot where our Capitol Hill neighbors and visitors alike can enjoy delicious food and drinks,” she continued. “We want our guests to safely come together again after a long, tumultuous two years and create new memories over comforting food, fresh ingredients, and strong margaritas.”
The new menu at Santa Rosa promises to be more expansive with a greater selection of tacos, beers, margaritas, and happy hour bites and samplers. Guests can expect a variety of options for neighborhood residents, families and Hill staffers. Featured dishes will include more traditional tacos like Barbacoa and Carne Asada Tacos alongside less traditional options like a Korean BBQ Taco and smaller, shareable bites like nachos and taco samplers. Additionally, the beverage menu will be updated to include about 10 unique margarita varieties and a selection of specialty beers.
The 60-seat casual dining room and 60-seat outdoor patio area will be open daily from 11:30 am to 10 p.m. for both dine-in and delivery/takeout service. A massive Day of the Dead custom mural will adorn the main wall leading up to the second floor by local artist, Rodrigo Pradel. Pradel has also decorated the storefront with his interpretation of classical Mexican artistry. Final menus, operating hours and opening details will be made available closer to the opening day in late winter.”
