Thanks to the DC Homeland Security & Emergency Management for the heads up:

“Reminder: Tomorrow (August 11 at 2:20PM ET), @fema and @FCC are conducting a national test of the Emergency Alert System. Help us spread the word!”

From FEMA:

“We’ll be conducting a national test in coordination with @FCC of the Emergency Alert System at 2:20 PM ET on Aug 11. The test will go to televisions & radios, while specially configured cell phones will receive an emergency alert test code message. #IPAWS”

“The Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) is FEMA’s national system for local alerting that provides authenticated emergency and life-saving information to the public through mobile phones using Wireless Emergency Alerts, to radio and television via the Emergency Alert System, and on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Weather Radio.”
