Sad Scuttlebutt: I Hear Fado Won’t be Reopening when all is said and done

808 7th Street, NW

Yesterday two very close sources told me that Fado would be closing permanently. I haven’t seen confirmation yet on Fado’s social media or website but this afternoon someone shared the following public Facebook post from someone seemingly very much in the know:

“FADO

22 years to the day that Fado opened in Chinatown DC (March 16, 1998), we closed our doors to Coronavirus on March 16, 2020. This week, that closing became permanent.

I’ve sat down to write this and started about 36 different sentences and deleted them all. I kept referencing Coronavirus, when really, Coronavirus has nothing to do with why we closed. Years of dealing with scumbag landlords and untenable real estate laws here in DC is why the pub has closed. But I think the predominant feeling through this pandemic has been grief. Every stage of grief like waves crashing down all times of the day and in different sizes and often unexpectedly. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and for some, acceptance of at least the lack of control and information and acceptance of the unknown.”

Potomac Harmony is Back! Following a gap year of competing, then virtual rehearsals during the pandemic, followed by the well-earned retirement of our long-term director, a year of a director search, Potomac Harmony hit the regional contest stage in Concord, North Carolina in March for the first time since 2018! It was exhilarating, reaffirming, and rewarding!

The chorus hit all of its goals, the biggest of which was to have fun and sing our best on contest stage — we did both! Because we earned a score over 400 points, our new Director, Allison Lynskey, was awarded the Novice Director award, photo above. Additionally, one of our charter members, Jackie Bottash, was nominated for and honored with the Leadership Excellence award. It was a celebratory weekend!

What’s next? So much! We now look forward to upcoming performances, growing our membership, and expanding our musical product with new arrangements and an education component each week. It’s an exciting time to be part of this ever-growing ensemble!
