Sad News about, “A key source of lots of DC’s flowers”, Behnke Nurseries Closing after this season

Thanks to Terry for passing on from Behnke Nurseries:

“As I look out over the garden center, it seems like a Spring season like all the others through our 89 year history. I see a nursery full of beautiful plants and fine staff, some of whom have worked here most their lives, and I’m so proud to be a part of this wonderful organization.

But with great sadness, I must tell you that this 2019 Spring season will be our last.

My family has been discussing what to do with our aging property and, for many reasons, the ultimate decision was to close the nursery.

The Behnke family and I would like to thank our wonderful customers. For three generations, our family has served your family. Many of you came here as children with your parents or grandparents. Others are new-found friends. Through the dedication of thousands of amazing employees over the years, we’ve helped make your gardening dreams a reality. In the process, it made us one of the largest and most well-known garden centers in the country.

For this Spring, we’re open and ready with everything you need for your home and garden. We hope to see all of you over the next few months and to help you find that perfect plant, so in the future you’ll remember the role we played in your gardening journey. Beginning today, April 4th, our entire store will be on sale. Our Closing Sale will continue until sometime in June when we will sadly close our gates for the last time.

Thank you all for 89 amazing years.

Though we are starting our closing sale, we have a full selection of trees, shrubs, houseplants & hardgoods and will continue to fill up with annuals & perennials for an otherwise normal spring season.
