Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I recently moved to the Brightwood Park/Petworth area (Emerson St) and have noticed that many houses in the neighborhood have colorful tire planters out front, like the one attached, both in flipped and older homes. We’ve lived in a few other neighborhoods in DC and never seen them before. Do you know anything about their history?

Google doesn’t tell us anything. We love how they seem unique to the neighborhood and a community-oriented way to beautify our streets when the weather is warm. How did they come to be?!”

Ed. Note: I coincidentally took a photo of one in Columbia Heights last weekend and I was gonna post that I don’t see as many as I used to – glad, more than a few are still kicking around. Looking forward to an internet sleuth finding out more about the origins!!
