This is Who I Am

Dan Silverman: Citizen of the District of Columbia. Post walkabout Sunday, slightly hungover, severely dehydrated.

On Friday afternoon I and the site was defamed by a progressive journalist but instead of getting into stupid online fights, I think I’m just gonna tell you directly who I am straight from the horse’s mouth! As for the site and its readers, well, in June 2018 we had 231,255 unique visitors (in October 2019 we had 525,442 unique visitors to the site itself not counting Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.) This group is not a monolith. The opinions of so many are as diverse and varied as you can imagine they would be. Obviously. Anyway, as for the site – you can go through the many posts and come to your own conclusions as to what we do or do not do. As for me – I’m tired of people telling me who I am. So I’m gonna make this my own post to point people to who really want to know who I am.

I am a walker. Rain, sleet, snow, shine or brutal heat, I am a walker.

I am Dan Silverman.

I am the Prince of Petworth.

I am 43 years old.

I am an observer.

I chronicle what I see.

I love classic cars but I hate driving.

I am a feminist.

I am a Jew.

I am a democrat.

I believe in equal pay.

I believe black lives matter.

I respect emergency responders.

I believe love is love.

I believe in a woman’s right to choose what decisions are best for her own body.

I am a father to two native born Washingtonians.

I am a husband to a native born Washingtonian.

I was born in New York City and lived in New York until I was 17 years old.

I have lived in Washington D.C. for 21 years (moved here in 1997.) I am not going anywhere.

I lived in Petworth from 2003-2015.

I live in North Cleveland Park.

I love all of D.C.’s neighborhoods for different reasons.

I believe the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

I believe in rooting for the home team.

I genuinely love Taco Bell and Dunkin Donuts.

I love a good slice of pizza, good bagels and appetizing.

I love dinner parties (doing the dishes less so.)

I understand complicated problems require complicated solutions.

I try to understand or at least appreciate nuance.

I appreciate and try to learn from those who have different perspectives and life’s experiences from my own.

I love slush puppies, especially blue raspberry.

Besides family, I believe good friends are the most valuable thing in the world.

I love the Beastie Boys, Pearl Jam, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, Run DMC, Sturgill Simpson, A Tribe Called Quest, John Denver and Nena.

I love flowers, trees, gardens, stained glass and architecture.

I love old maps and history.

I love cheese and pickles.

I love trap shooting and target shooting.

I love movies but no longer have time to see any.

I love the French national soccer team.

I love cook outs and concerts.

I love craft beer, especially Three Stars, DC Brau, Dogfish Head and RAR.

I love Coors Banquet Beer and Budweiser.

I love Powers Irish Whiskey.

I love coffee.

I love cafe culture and dining al fresco.

I love libraries and books.

I love roof decks.

I love porches.

I love good people – good people.

I love people who tell the truth.

I love people who admit they are wrong when they are wrong.

I love people who are principled.

I love people who look out for one another.

I believe we can and should do better.

I love Rock Creek Park.

I love artists.

I love asking questions.

I’m not the smartest guy in the room but I’m not stupid.

I am passionate.

I love the beach but am always happy to come home.

I love my cat and tropical fish tanks.

I love Caesar Salads and French Onion Soup.

I love baseball caps.

I love the Nationals.

I love the Stanley Cup.

I love unity.

I love pride.

I love smiles.

I love saying hello.

I love when others say hello.

I love riding the bus when I’m beat.

I’m still learning every day.

I make mistakes.

I try my hardest.

I love the District of Columbia.

This is who I am.
