2nd time in a week (9th and Upshur last week) I’ve felt a bit unnerved in my new neighborhood =( Hope they get these guys quickly. Sad seeing such severe crime so close to home. Hope the victim is okay.

I would encourage you to reach out to MPD and let them know your concern. I’d reach out to Commander Manlapaz and Captain Larsen, contact info here: https://mpdc.dc.gov/page/fourth-district-roster

MPD is certainly going to be investigating but they can make shifts in patrols and dedicated units if there is some urgency from neighbors.

All Manlapaz can do is respond when a person calls 911. He doesn’t have the resources to actually do an investigation. If I had a nickel for every time they “increased patrols” , I’d be a rich man. It’s also never done anything to improve things.

This is less than a block from the Petworth playground and only a couple of blocks from the library.

As I said to MPD4D leadership as recently as last week: children from area daycares use this playground daily when the weather is nice, and narcotics traffic continues to increase around here, including near the benches behind the Yes, and in the adjacent alley. If MPD is interested in cutting down on robberies and guns, they ought to keep the attention on the drugs in the area as well.

It’s going to be another long summer.

oh my gosh. I’m just down the street and didn’t hear anything — two violent incidents in the area so close together is really disconcerting!

There was also a shooting (technically a shots fired) event last night around 1:50am in the 4000 block of 4th St. The shooter hit a car that eventually became disabled. This is ~5 blocks away from the Upshur event. Unlike the Upshur block, this block of 4th is a known area for past gun crime.

    • jonah

Correction this happened Sunday morning at 1:50am.

So how does this factor into crime stats? We hear shots fired all the time.

Word on the block is it was very targeted and they kicked the door in to the victims rental unit and shot him. Everything I read made it sound like it was a drive by, but it appears it wasn’t.

the guys that was shot is a dealer. it had been escalating lately. lots of traffic and a lot of PCP behavior by those coming and going. he is the basement renter. nothing will change.

      • Anon

Yeah, I knew it was him. He hasn’t been living there for too long, maybe a few months. He always seems to be watching his back when he leaves and has lots of traffic in and out of the unit. He’s not a good addition to our quiet little block. Maybe he’ll move after this incident…Fingers crossed
