From DC Courts:

“The DC Courts want to warn members of the public not to be taken-in by a telephone scam in which they get a voicemail asking them to call a 1-844 telephone number about money they owe on an outstanding court matter, and to push 5 to make payment and resolve the matter. What differentiates these calls from other scams is that the caller ID system has been manipulated and shows a DC Court-issued telephone number on the caller ID display. Please be advised that the District of Columbia Courts never solicit payments via telephone. All official court correspondence is processed through the U.S. Postal Service. The public is advised not to respond to these telephone calls.

I’m a DC Courts Employee. Here’s an announcement issued on our intranet this morning:

“It has come to our attention that the Superior Court is being used in a telephone scam. DC residents are receiving robo calls telling them they owe money on an outstanding court matter and they are told to call 1-844-582-0100 and then press option 5 to make a payment to clear up the matter. What differentiates these calls from other scams is that the caller ID system has been manipulated and shows a DC Court-issued telephone number on the caller ID display. Please be advised that the District of Columbia Courts never solicit payments via telephone. All official court correspondence is processed through the U.S. Postal Service. Do not respond to these telephone calls.”

    Hope this helps.

As a dinosaur with a landline I get lots of scam calls. Even though I hang up immediately I find them very annoying. My most recent continuing scam call begins with an unauthorized record of Obama and scams for donations to use about Trump travel ban. ( listened once instead of hanging up a first Obama words) This is shabbily done and Obana has reported it to law enforcement but I still get the call a couple of times a week. Here’s an article about the scam: http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/03/barack-obama-trump-robocalls

I don’t even answer my landline any more — I let it go straight to the answering machine, and use it to screen calls.

I recognize that “Unicorn”! That’s Fred Parker’s horse, he resides in the back of the antique truck in front of Hard Times Cafe on King Street in Old Town =)
