Another way to burn off all that fast casual coming too! Thanks to a reader for sending from the Arris building. Conte’s website says:

“We are excited to announce that Conte’s Bike Shop will be opening a store in Washington, D.C.! Just like the other Conte’s locations, this location in the Yards will offer bicycles and accessories from prominent brands such as Giant, Liv, Cannondale, BMC and more. Our D.C. location will also stock electric bikes from Stromer, Cannondale, and Giant.”

With all the bike shop closures on Barracks Row and H Street, I think this and REI will be the only somewhat close options for people in Capitol Hill, correct? That market changed so fast from saturated to deserted. Wish Capitol Hill Bikes could have continued.

      Uh – Daily rider?

A different market segment but the Gearin’ Up co-op in Eckington does sell used bikes.

Another shop that sells road bikes, mountain bikes, and beach cruisers? This city needs more options for practical bikes with fenders, racks, lights, and internal hubs. Bicycle Space and the Daily Rider are heading in the right direction, but a store dedicated to city bikes like JC Lind in Chicago or Bicycle Belle in Boston would be awesome here.

Papillion and The Old Bike Shop in Arlington lean a bit more toward the practical i.e. utility bikes rather than tricked out city bikes.

Gravel & Grind in Frederick carries a wide array of this functional bikes and accessories. It’s a bummer it’s not in DC though.

Velo Orange offers functional bikes and products too. They mostly have an online presence but are in Annapolis.

I’ve but my own for a fraction of the cost using vintage but good condition steel frame Treks. Durable and look/ride great. Then adding Schmidt SON and Shutter Precision hub dynamos plus Supernova head/tailights, Velocity Rims (including a 650b conversion), Brooks saddles, fenders, and other bits.

City Bikes is coming back to Barracks Row in the old Capitol Bikes shop space.

They did a pop-up sometime last year (maybe in May around BTWW?) and the guys seemed very friendly. I look forward to seeing the finished shop.
Also in the ‘hood, kinda, sometimes: the Handy Bikes truck parked at 1st and K SE. I have no idea what those guys’ schedule is like, but they’re awesome.
