Earlier this month I gave you some of the best bars to drink a beer in DC. Now I’m gonna give you some of the best places to drink a beer outside of a bar – legally. In no particular order:

1. Yards Park (at events like Snallygaster and New Belgium’s Tour de Fat etc. Navy Yard/Capitol Riverfront.)

2. Our locally brewed beer tasting rooms (DC Brau, 3 Stars, Right Proper in Brookland etc.)

3. National Portrait Gallery Pavilion (Chinatown)

4. Kennedy Center (Foggy Bottom)

5. Nats Park and RFK (just wait till next year!)

6. E Street Cinema (Penn Quarter)

7. East Potomac Golf Course Clubhouse (Hains Point)

(The Soldiers Home golf course used to have a vending machine back in the day with beer for like 2 bucks it was awesome but I’m told it’s no longer there. Still I’ll add an honorable mention for events held at the Soldiers Home like Oktoberfest when it’s not raining. Petworth)

8. Brew at the Zoo (Woodley Park)

9. Heurich House Museum (Dupont Circle)

10. Smithsonian “After Hours” Events (various)

11. Jazz in the Sculpture Garden (7th and Constitution NW)

12. Embassy parties and events (various)

13. Glen’s Garden Market (Shaw and Dupont.)

and hell if Michelin can do it, I can too:

14. Wolf Trap (Virginia Hinterland)

You can also grab a beer at the food courts of the Air and Space museum. At least a few years ago you could.

      • Nathan

I think you still can, I know you can at the IMAX there (as well as the Natural History Museum).

  • annieone

East Potomac Golf Course Clubhouse in the late summer after a round, run and/or swim should be #1.

    • The list is in no particular order. However, noted!

    • Ann

And be sure to get the onion rings!

    • JohnH

It’s also the cheapest beer in town.

Auditoriums 6 & 7 at AMC Mazza Galerie

Verizon Center (if we are including RFK and Nats Park) and any of the places that do wine and painting combos

  • Ben

Within a few feet of those pavilions on the mall!

I still yern for an actual beer garden on the mall. Now that would be awesome….

    • CHGal

Do you mean those concession stand-things on the mall? I’ve always wondered what the rules are sine they have beer on the menu!

  • PorchKing

#1 for byob is my porch.

  • U neighbor

Happy hour at Trader Joe’s (wine technically)

I’ve noticed more grocery stores get in on the happy hour game – never personally felt the need, but folks seems to partake. Whole Foods and some Giant’s (e.g., Cathedral Commons) seem to snag good beers and even have grocery carts designed to hold the glasses.

  • Gumball

I was wondering this the other day! Not that my lack of knowledge has ever deterred me from discreetly imbibing when I wasn’t quite so sure. thanks!
