From DPR:

“Today, the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) released the 2016 outdoor pools summer schedule. Changes to the schedule include:

all outdoor pools will open at 11 am, 2 hours earlier than in the past;

Ed. Note: Monday – Friday will be 11 am. The weekend hours will remain the same. (12pm-6pm)

3 children’s pools will be closed for the season due to capital construction. Only Park View children’s pool will operate during the 2016 summer season; and
the Southwest Duck Pond (6 & I Street, SW), which is currently closed for construction, will re-open on July 4.

All outdoor pools and Park View children’s pool will open for the summer on Memorial Day weekend (May 28, 29 and 30) from 12 pm to 6 pm; and will operate on a weekends-only schedule (Saturday and Sunday) through June 12. Starting June 18, all outdoor pools will operate on their individual summer schedules.

All spray parks will open for the summer on Saturday, May 28 and will operate daily, from 10 am to 7 pm, for the entire summer season. Spray parks will close on Monday, September 5.

In addition to the schedule changes, two outdoor pools will feature brand new concession stands, located on the pool deck area. Patrons will have the opportunity to enjoy drinks and snacks purchased at the pool. The Banneker and Ridge Road outdoor pool locations will offer concession stands. Please note that the stands will accept cash or credit cards.

i am delighted by this news on this gray cold bummer of a day! YAY! I will be poolside before I know it.

  • hmmm

    great news!

but note: the Southwest Duck Pond reopening, while nice, is kind of a non sequitur here. It’s just a park with a fountain, and the water is not treated in any way you’d want for swimming or splashing. There’s no lifeguard or other staff and no locker rooms.

    • Caroline

Yeah, I thought it was strange that it was included in this announcement.
But yay for pools! Why can’t it be summer already?

  • Stacie

It doesn’t make sense to me that they would still open at 12 on weekends! That’s when families want to head out early!

    • say what

this exactly. DPR continues to blow it when it comes to managing the pools. Understaffed facilities, no show life guards. A petition with over 2000 names was submitted about 4 years ago requesting earlier wekeend openings. 9am would be ideal for those of us with young kids. noon is a terrible opening time and its the hottest part of the day for little kids.

  • anon

UGH! I got so excited when I saw they would start opening at 11am…but then, nope, just on weekdays. What good is that??

  • E in Rosedale

Extend the weekend hours already! Noon is way too late to open on a Saturday or Sunday. Half the day is gone by that point.

  • stacksp

I wonder if the noon start time is a calculated savings of some sort for the city given that the hottest time of the day is generally Noon to 3 or 4pm. Financially, it may not be prudent for them to pay the additional wages to open at say 9/10 when the facility will most likely not have heavy usage. 11am seems to be a better start time imo.

  • logan

At least at Hains Point, there is a masters swim team that swims before noon. So the pool is making money by delaying their public opening.

  • pru

Chiming in to echo all the complaints about them still only opening at noon on weekends.
It’s infuriating, after years of petitions signed by hundreds of families.

  • wpk_dc

I’m a huge fan of DC’s public pools, having lived near both Francis Pool and Shaw/Howard Banneker Pool. I just moved to Mt. Vernon Triangle, however, so I have to see if there’s a pool near me or if I should still go back to Shaw/Howard Banneker.

In Ward 6, the Capper children’s pool in SE will be open. That was left off the list. Between L and M, 5th and 6th, SE.
