NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! Their little chicken biscuits were the best.

  • welshie

Bummer… I really hoping for the chance to try the peep doughnut this year. :(

Well, I guess I know where I’m going tonight! I’ll miss their doughnuts, fried chicken, and happy hour.

Please keep the happy hour. Please keep the happy hour.

  • Philippe Lecheval

Most of NRG’s places have mediocre food and it’s clear that they’re trying too hard, but GBD had really good chicken and biscuits. I hope they keep it around at the new place.

    • Iron Gate is very, very, good last time I went.

      • sproc

Iron Gate has been amazing every time I’ve gone. No chainness to it whatsoever.

    • Trying to hard is an odd critique. I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone say “I wish this restaurant would try a lot less”.

      • anon

It’s a figure of speech. I won’t speak to its validity in this case, but I think we all know what he meant.

      • Anonymouse

Calling your food “crave-worthy eats” is trying too hard.

    • Schmooky

This is the type of trite criticism I’ve come to expect from people who leave comments on these new restaurants/bars posts. Red Apron, Birch & Barley, Iron Gate, yeah NRG sure serves average food.

      • anonymous

I’ve never been to Iron Gate, but I have been to a bunch of the other places, and I would say most are solid, but not outstanding (some good aspects and some bad). For example, Blue Jacket/Arsenal is a cool space, with an interesting beer selection (reasonable people can disagree about this), but the food is mediocre. Red Apron could be really good if they would invest in some decent bread. The bread is just awful. Those fries tho…they are effing amazing.

I thought their chicken was sub-par.

This is such a bummer. They have the best Happy Hour in the city. I was just raving about thier beer selections to someone recently. Gosh, last week I was debating between GBD and DGS for happy hour after work and chose DGS since I hadn’t been there for a while. I had realized GBD was closing so soon, I would’ve gone there instead. I hope I can pop over today or tomorrow. :-(

    • eggs

Their beer options for happy hour were the best!!

    • Yeah, and their happy hour prices were legit too. When I read this posting I initially mistook it for DGS, which I wouldn’t have lamented much at all. This closing though really sucks.

  • skj84

Also is this space cursed? Wasn’t this the same space occupied by the ill fated “Yola” yogurt shop?

    • jumpingjack

I think you’re right that it’s cursed! Yola was also a great little place, as is GDB. And they both shut down too soon.

    • Pixie

I still miss Yola! I loved that place.

  • mtp

This seems.. abrupt? Was this announced previously/anticipated, or just, “tomorrow’s our last day, bye!”

    • Anonynon

they are just changing the food its not changing management. Chicken and doughnuts isn’t for anyone I imagine they are trying to get a broader appeal.

    • anon

definitely abrupt. i went on Tuesday night (day before they closed) and talked with the waiters about it. almost all of them found out about it from an email from NRG, not their direct supervisor, only a couple of days before it was announced publicly. according to our waitress, some of the staff members were offered positions at other NRG restaurants, but not all, and some of them far away. what a shame…

The Luther sandwich is legendary and needs to stick around. Nothing more satisfying after enjoying some legally gifted DC cannabis.

    • You can still get it at ChurchKey.
