“Dear PoPville,

I’m writing in hopes of finding recommendations from your readers for indoor swimming pools. With the closing of the National Capital YMCA, I’m trying to find a new lap pool in the area but keep coming up blank!

I know the Anthony Bowen YMCA is open but am looking for something a little closer to downtown. I was wondering if any readers might know of some local pools (maybe ones that are part of another facility, like the JCC) or have any recommendations?

Thanks!”

Wilson High School has an indoor pool that is free if you are a DC resident. So does Cardozo High School.

    • ANC

As does Dunbar, though I’m not sure about the hours.

      • Northzax

        So does Marie Reed.

Does anybody know hours/entrance location on Cardozo? I’ve been trying to figure it out for a while now, but haven’t been able to find any info.

I’m not convinced Cardozo Pool is actually open to the public. Jim Graham announced that he singlehandedly had had it restored (sic) and that it would be open to the public, but I’ve never seen anything saying it actually did open to the public. And I’ve looked a lot. Emailed the school and got no reply.

Here’s PoP’s original post on it:

What are the hours for public access at the Cardozo pool? I can’t find any info online.

Boy do I have the perfect condo for you!

      +1

And there’s also a pool at Dunbar High School, which is convenient to downtown.

do you know what entrance to use at dunbar? I’d love to start using their pool regularly!

      • A

At Dunbar HS, the pool entrance is around the back on the O St. side. Make sure to check the hours on the DPR website. It’s only open three days a week and then only morning and evening. Weekends it’s open 9 to 5.

thanks i knew the hours just not which door to go in! going for a swim tomorrow am!

Metro up to Tenleytown and go to Wilson Pool. By far the best public facility in the city.

  • DC1

Try the Jewish community center on 16th & Q. Their indoor pool is fairly decent.

    • LC

The JCC’s pool is 19 yards, which doesn’t really work if you’re a lap swimmer who keeps track of yardage (or if you’re used to swimming in normal-sized pools). The closest one to where they Y was is Marie Reed at 18th and U. And all of the DC public pools are free…

as previously noted, Dunbar HS, on New Jersey Ave, NW, has a lap pool and is open mornings and evenings:
    Effective January 5th, 2015 Dunbar Aquatic Center’s Hours of Operation will be Mon/Wed/Fri 6:00am – 8:00am & 5:00pm – 9:00pm; Sat & Sun 9:00am – 5:00pm (Closed Tue & Thu)

    Dunbar Hours: Mon, Wed & Fri – 6 am to 8 am & 5 pm to 9 pm | Sat & Sun 9 am to 5 pm | Closed Tues & Thurs

the washington hilton in dupont has a seasonal pool (I think may 1 – oct 31). last time I checked membership was reasonable considering other gyms in the area. i opted to go up to wilson as other commenters suggested.

The University Club at 16th/M has a pool in the basement. I’ve never seen it, but friends of mine say it’s nice. You’ll have to become a member, but then you can also eat there!

    The Takoma Aquatic Center

  • AG

The Eastern Market pool is indoors and open to all DC residents. Not downtown but only about two blocks from the metro.

  • MRD

Wardman Park has a swim and fitness club. I haven’t been but keep seeing it advertised.

  • dcgator

If anyone has info on indoor bball facilities, that would be awesome, too!

  • It’s just me

Trinity University has a great pool. They have community rates for members, but it is worth looking to see if your insurance offers reduced cost health club membership. Mine does – you get access to a bunch of clubs for $25/month, but only Trinity is in DC. It is still cheaper than joining outright.

Side question: Is the East Potomac Park Pool still going to be closed next year? I know there was some uncertainty on future plans (and very little info).

  • Paja

The University Club pool is fabulous. It was a big decision in my joining the UClub. Great hours 7 days a week. Pool is clean, locker room is clean, includes towels. I rarely have to wait for a lane.

If you live in Foggy Bottom or West End, you can get a community membership to the GW rec facility. Lap pool in the basement.

Georgetown also has an indoor pool and public can buy rec memberships regardless of where you live. Altho that’s obviously not in downtown.
