1323 Connecticut Ave, NW

Yesterday we learned that Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken will be opening in January at 1308 G Street, NW. Sounds like a very similar set up (with craft beer) is coming to the former Yola space at 1323 Connecticut Ave, NW in Dupont. From GBD Fried Chicken + Doughnuts’ facebook page:

GBD (which gets its name from the restaurant kitchen shorthand for golden, brown and delicious) will be the destination for fresh gourmet doughnuts and flavorful fried chicken when its doors open to Washingtonians this winter.

The husband and wife team of Chef Kyle Bailey & Pastry Chef Tiffany MacIsaac of Birch & Barley will be pairing their sweet & savory specialties alongside an impressive craft beer list from Greg Engert and a selection of spirited punches.

Located just south of Dupont Circle, GBD will pull triple duty –breakfast, lunch and dinner– every day of the week. In the morning, guests will find a bright and cheery spot to enjoy one of MacIsaac’s fresh homemade doughnuts with a cup of coffee from premium craft roaster Mad Cap coffee. Fried chicken and a selection of sides will take center stage at lunchtime, while the evening will see the addition of appetizers to the menu and beer, wine and cocktails to the beverage selection.

  • Well this just pulled the rug out from under Astro. I was going to roll my eyes until I saw the names Kyle Bailey and Tiffany MacIsaac.

those names mean nothing to me.

      • It says in the press release: they’re the chefs behind Birch and Barley, which has a fried chicken maple bacon doughnut sandwich at brunch. They’re fantastic chefs.

what? no fried chicken for breakfast?

Were these the doughnuts at the pop-up of Salt and Sundry at Union Market? IF SO, I have to admit I was really not impressed. I found the doughnuts to be dry and kind of like a rock. The flavors seemed inspired but execution was poor, I even threw half of mine away. But seeing that Birch and Barley’s pastry chef is involved, I can’t really believe this was the same place. Anyone know which shop did that pop up?

    • Prince Of Petworth

The pop up was at Salt and Sundry.

Is there room for two of these in DC???

wonder how they will do with Astro coming around so soon

    • iaom

Well, the Astro’s going to be down by Metro Center and this one is right in Dupont, so it’s not like they’re especially close to each other. If anything, this place might be competing to some extent with the Krispy Kreme across the street.

    • CA

You do know that Washington D.C. is a large city that manages over 5.7 million people in the metro area?

  • There is not much that could be done to make me less sad about losing Yola. But this might just do the trick. The space is lovely and one of my favorite places to hang out in Dupont.

If YOLA was the lulu lemon set’s place to much endless wifi who will hang out at a high-end doughnut shop? Yoga drop outs?

Fried chicken and doughnuts, yet another sign that the entire restaurant industry seems to be controlled by those with the mindset and appetite of a toddler

and I love that it’s replacing a former frozen yogurt shop which was next to a yoga studio. America!
