Shootings Reported in Mt. Vernon Square

A reader sends the photo above around 7:30pm Sunday and writes:

“Heard 7 shots a block away from my house an hour ago. This is the crime scene at 7th and N. Saw 7 pieces of police tape on the ground – probably marking the bullet casings. They just wheeled an older man out on a stretcher and into the ambulance.”

On the Mt. Vernon Square Listserv a resident wrote about a different incident around 2:30pm:

“Anyone know anything about the shooting this afternoon north of N St. On 5th? I heard what sounded like semi-automatic fire, or lots of handgun rounds. Police have it taped off at 5th and evidence markers everywhere.”

  • Seems no one was hit, according to cop at 7th and M. I heard it too…

I’m curious to know more about the 5th St one. Was walking my dog back and had to reroute over to 6th to get around all the police tape. Early warm weather violence doesn’t bode well for the summer months. Might be time to move to a safer area after three years (plus that awful rape at gunpoint not long ago on 5th and Q–not far from my house). Very upsetting.

We were at the new Bundy Dog Park when the afternoon shots went off. Witnessed a young man running away from the direction of the gun shots and what seemed to be a car chasing him. Police were on the scene in minutes. It was definitely a disturbance to a wonderful afternoon but Mt. Vernon is still a wonderful neighborhood.

Guns n drugs would be my guess.

The bright side is no one was hurt. Looking forward to a great summer in Mt. Vernon Square. Lets keep our eyes open in the neighborhood and the communication up.

Makes me all the more glad I moved from the area last year. Luckily my only bad experience was being robbed on 5th St. between Good Libations and Safeway in broad daylight.

They don’t spray paint, they just spray bullets.

  • How do I get on the Mt. Vernon Listserve? Anymore info on this?!

Lt. Linda Wingate will be at the April Mount Vernon Square Neighborhood Association monthly meeting tomorrow night (Tuesday, April 17) to discuss the recent spate of shootings and violence. The meeting will be held at 7:30 at Yale Condos (437 NYA). All are invited to attend.

I walked by around 7:15. The entire intersection of 7th and N was roped off, and cops were redirecting traffic from a block out in each direction. The police would only tell me it was a “crime scene”, some guys loitering on the corner told me someone had a seizure (although they took a while to come up with that story), and a few older ladies nearby told me there was a shooting. No official details. I watched the cops put down evidence markers and take photos for about 45 minutes from a friend’s apartment a block away. Everything was cleared up by 8.

“I heard what sounded like semi-automatic fire, or lots of handgun rounds.”

The lack of proper gun nomenclature in this forum is maddening. The OP needs to learn the basics before describing events so as not to confuse others.

A semi-automatic firearm is a firearm which automatically reloads, but will only fire one round per trigger pull. Pistols are a type of semi-automatic handgun, revolvers are not.

A handgun is a firearm designed to have the potential to be held and operated by one hand, although not necessarily used that way. This characteristic differentiates handguns as a general class of firearms from long guns such as rifles and shotguns (which are mounted against the shoulder).

A round is a complete, unfired cartridge that encompasses the bullet, propellant and primer into a single unit within a containing metallic case precisely made to fit within the firing chamber of a firearm.

    • But they’re all considered “shot guns” right?
