“Dear PoP,

Here are some images from about 4:30 this morning at the corner of 9th and N St NW. Next to Old City Green and down the block from the Long View Gallery and the Lamont Bishop Gallery. We were jolted awake by the sound of gun fire and the squeal of tires speeding away. The ambulance didn’t stay long, no one at the scene was injured. It took the police only a few minutes to arrive, but by then, whoever was in that vehicle was long gone.

P.S. Truth be told, PoP. I hesitated in sending these over. I don’t want to add to any negative perceptions of my neighborhood, but I remembered another incident many months ago on 8th and N, and PoP was the only place I saw anything reported about it. The most significant part about this, to me, is what’s not pictured. Before the sun was up, the tow truck arrived, scooped up the vehicle, swept away the glass – and life went on.

Runners jogged by on their morning efforts. The Circulator started its loop. Tomorrow the saxophone player will be once again outside Old City Green. The Long View Gallery will still invite all the neighborhood in for a monthly art opening. Pets will scamper over to Wagtime. Alabama fans will flock to the Old Dominion Brewhouse to grab 128 oz beer towers and cheer on their team. Conferences will jam the Convention Center during the week and the marching band will loop around it on the weekends. People will still trot through the alleys to find Rogue 24 or the secret entrance to SUNdeVICH.

Work will continue on the stores in City Vista, and the Yale apartments and lofts, and the condos above the Shaw metro station, and the new Convention Center Marriot. We’re still walking down the street to the Giant, and to the clothing swap at the Shaw library later today. Incidents like this happen from time to time, but this neighborhood won’t go back to the way it was in decades past. There are too many good people of all backgrounds and ethnicities moving in every week. Those that would do things like this in the dark of night, lost claim to our city long ago. They will continue to be pushed out by the forces of positive change.”

“Dear PoPville,

Long time listener, first time caller … I live in the wonderful area between Logan Circle and Shaw – technically, the Shaw Historic District if you count all of the signs denoting my ‘hood as such.

I have been wondering for ages what’s going on with the renovations of the dilapidated rowhouses on 11th and O Sts. The address listed with all the demo permits is 1137 11th St NW, and the company listed is Triangle Communications Associates, at 1456 T St NW. I can’t find out too much information about the company online, so I’m hoping you may have some scuttlebutt to report.

Do you know anything that’s happening here? I almost hate to write in because if it’s a good condo/apt renovation, I want first dibs as a neighbor! No one likes sharing Super Awesome Apartment Secrets but the renovations are starting to look pretty good I have to find out.

Unfortunately I don’t have any “before” photos, but the first floor used to be a scary/dingy convenience store. I’ve never seen any of the rowhouses occupied.”

Anyone know the story here? Condos? Rentals?

I’ll be sure to update when they go on the market.

If you have any fun or interesting animal/pet photos please shoot me an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say what neighborhood you’re from or upload to the PoPville flickr pool with your pets name and neighborhood. I can’t guarantee I’ll get them all posted but I’ll do my best.

Thanks to a reader for sending. This is the building at 1636 North Capitol St. NW that we’ve been monitoring the pop up. Back in May ’11 we first discussed scuttlebutt of a wine bar possibly coming to the retail space.

“Dear PoPville,

So I live in a converted 2 apartment townhouse near 15th and T. We live on the 1st floor and basement leve (3br) and the upstairs has 4 bedrooms on 2 floors. The guys upstairs moved in July 1 and just recieved a Pepco bill for over $750 dollars for 2 months. They called and Pepco says it’s correct. I’ve never experienced an electric bill this high. Both apartments have central air and the guys keep theirs around 75.

Any idea what the next steps should be? Is there someone they should contact?”

Anyone ever successfully argue a Pepco bill was too high?

Ed. Note: we spoke about monitoring your meter in an apartment building here.

“Dear PoP,

I recently moved to Washington, DC and am living in Columbia Heights. When I arrived here, I adopted a rescue dog from a shelter. I have noticed that when I walk her around many of the neighborhoods in DC, I constantly find her sniffing out and finding chicken bones that people have thrown out in garden beds, on sidewalks, and around trees on the side of the street. This is a huge problem for all dogs and dog owners, as chicken bones can splinter in dogs’ mouths and throats. This can cause severe bleeding, choking, and other dangerous health problems for dogs. What can we do to raise awareness of this problem? What are the local rules about littering here in DC?”

A new pilot program launched this spring but it is likely to early to tell if it has had any impact. Unfortunately this is a nuisance that we’ve battled for years and are likely to continue to battle for years.
