“Dear PoP,

This morning at around 9:30 on my bike ride to work, I saw an old, sad looking German Shepherd dog wandering around the SW corner of 11th and Florida. He looked lost; there was no owner-type person within sight. If anyone is missing him, he probably is still around there — he looked like he had arthritic hips, so I don’t think he could get far.

Also, I wanted to ask your readers what one should do in similar situations in the future. I don’t really know much about dogs, so I was uncomfortable with getting too close to check if he had tags, and taking him home with me was not an option either (since I was on my way to work & don’t have a car). I thought about calling the Humane Society, but I didn’t want to doom him to being put down before his time.”

Yes, it’s a slow news day…but this is pretty sweet.

The reader writes:

“To get to work I take the metro out to College Park and then walk ~15 minutes into the middle of nowhere. I never see anyone, but most days last spring I ran into this family of geese somewhere along the way. So this video was a no-brainer.”

We’ve judged the building but now it’s time to judge the bar. Jack Rose is located at 2007 18th St, NW. Their Web site says:

“Jack Rose Dining Saloon, a true DC establishment crafted from the minds of DC natives & longtime friends Bill Thomas, Stephen King, & Michael Hartzer. At Jack Rose Dining Saloon one can experience over 1400 bottles of hand-selected scotches, bourbons & spirits, uniquely hand-crafted cocktails, wines from around the world, and over 20 beers on draft. On the first floor you will find our main saloon bar that seats up to 35 and a full-service dining room. Hosting your own event? Our second floor has an elegant private dining lounge with it’s own balcony and fireplace. If you’re in the mood for something more casual, hang out on the open-air terrace and enjoy snacks from the BBQ Pit or grab a drink on the Back Porch Bar…feeling like hiding out?… head down to the Prohibition Bar “no secret knock” required. At Jack Rose Dining Saloon, one can sense the ties and tributes between the region, and the long history of the spirits that line the shelves.”

The road construction on 18th Street is a bit of an obstruction but has anyone stopped by yet?

From an email:

Join us this Saturday, August 6th between 12 and 6pm for the Third Annual Art Walk in DC’s North Capital Neighborhoods of Bloomingdale, Eckington and Truxton Circle. Featuring “Pop-up” art installations that will be in front lawns throughout the month of August, an Artist Village with unique crafts for sale, various venues with live music and much more, this year’s Art Walk is not to be missed. Sponsored by North Capital Main Street and the Pinkline Project, the mission is to bring the community together in an event for all ages to enjoy.

Some call it Block Party, some call it Grand Finale — oh heck, call it whatever you want — but we are closing the unit block of T Street for some lively music, a Pig Roast and craft brews. A 250 pound pig will be slowly smoked for 24 hours and served alongside roasted chicken, sausage, grilled vegetables and more in an all-inclusive buffet for $15 starting at 4pm. Great Lakes and Heavy Seas Breweries will represent with their awesome craft-brews on site with pints available for $5. A selection of red and white wines will be available for $5 a glass as well.

Come for the food and drink, stay for the entertainment. On stage there will be a lively Rumba Flamenco Band with dancer. In between sets, we’ll host a Pizza Eating Contest during which representation from Big Bear Cafe, Rustik Tavern, Boundary Stone, Solly’s Tavern and soon to open in Petworth/Park View, DC Reynolds Bar, will be in fierce competition to put down the most pizzas in our allotted time-span. Come support your local providers of food and drink as they put their skills to the test. And the best part of this, the Prince of Petworth himself will be hosting the contest wearing his “Prince”ly attire. Oh yeah, we ordered the cape and crown. Maybe we can convince him to scarf down some pizzas as well.

If all this doesn’t sound like fun to you, we don’t know what does.

You can call this Just Another Random Day in Bloomingdale.

If you’ve ever spent any time wandering the streets around Dupont Circle and wondered what it would take to snap up an entire house that’s already been completely renovated, this would kind of be your answer. Just like most neighborhoods in DC, houses in Dupont come in a range of sizes, styles, and conditions. Even in rough condition, an entire home in Dupont does not come cheap, nor is it an easy find these days.

“Dear PoP,

I was walking south from the Columbia Hts metro along 14th between Irving and Columbia about forty minutes ago [Thurs.] when I heard glass breaking. I looked up, and a youth had broken into the back window of a blue Honda, reached in, grabbed a bag, looked at me, and sped off. There was another bag left in the car that he didn’t get because he noticed about ten people watching him. He wasn’t alone – there were a group of boys his age on bikes and they left in the same direction/at the same time he did.

I rushed the two blocks home, called the police and reported the theft, along with a full description of the youth and the direction in which he rode his bike. Two minutes later, I get a call back saying that they had apprehended a subject and that the police would pick me up and drive by to see if I recognized the subject. Unfortunately, I recognized the subject as one of the boys in the group, but not the one that broke the glass and took the bag. The officer took down my info and asked me to call if I saw the subject again – chances are that he lives nearby and they can apprehend him if I can do a positive ID. We drove by the car again and the owners returned and were assessing the damage.

I was amazed at how fast the police responded. The whole response and drive by took about 15 minutes total. I can’t emphasize for our community: 1) Be vigilant. This happened on a busy street in the middle of the day, and I made sure to get a good look at his face. 2) Please don’t leave anything in your car that’s visible from the street, even a busy street like 14th.”

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

Reader Rant:

“For a glorious week or so, both platform-to-mezzanine escalators on the 13th Street side of U Street station were actually operating, but this morning the previously broken one is back out of service (pretty frustrating for such a busy entrance). On the plus side, the service techs were actually there working on the escalator when I took this pic around 8am.”

Reader Revel:

“Summertime in Petworth, happy smiles and ice cream…”

As the first Friday in August I’m gonna take the opportunity to ask a question I always love asking – do you have any good summer reading recommendations? What’s the last great book you read? It doesn’t have to be literature, it can simply be a good fun read.

It’s a few years old but I just finished and highly recommend A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz.

Congrats to anon 10:46am (03 Aug.) with:

“The department of internal affairs found it easier than expected to make their case against the officer suspected of moonlighting as a pimp…”

Runner up to tapes with:

“Apparently someone forgot to check the “unmarked” option when ordering the new undercover squad car.”

Honorable mention to Ocoee with:

“Not to be outdone by the council, Cathy Lanier tweets a photo of her new taxpayer funded ride.”

Please email me directly for your shirts.
