Thanks to all for sharing this big development. ANC rep Rachelle Nigro wrote yesterday:

“This afternoon I received information from Giant’s District manger that the Giant will be closing on September 8th. The pharmacy will close on August 22nd and the prescriptions will be transferred to the Safeway on L St. They are working on a shuttle bus schedule to the Giant on 14th and Park Rd.”

For those who haven’t been following these developments – it is part of the City Market at O project. You can learn about CityMarketatO here and here:

“Construction is slated to commence in February 2011 with the preservation and securing of the historic market structure. This will be succeeded in late Summer 2011 with the closing of the Giant Food storeand the razing of the grocery store and excavation of the site. The Giant will reopen in late summer 2013 with the 181-room limited service hotel and 400 units of market rate rental housing opening in early fall 2013. Completing the project, the 84-unit affordable senior housing building and 145-unit condominium will be delivered n fall 2014”

You can talk about whatever is on your mind – quality of life issues, a beautiful tree you spotted, scuttlebutt, or any random questions/thoughts you may have. I’ll open this thread every morning at 10am.

“Dear PoP,

This Thursday night, around 10:15, I heard a round of, what sounded like gunshots, outside my apartment. Within minutes, Police and EMS were at the scene. Firstly, I want to commend the quick response of the Police – it was no more than five minutes before police were on the scene with guns drawn.

Finally, I was hoping you had any information on what happened. Despite all the emergency responders at the scene, I am not quite sure what happened.”

MPD confirms at 11:01pm Thurs. night:

“We are working a shooting at Clifton and University Place.”

Unfortunately I have seen no more details released.

“Dear PoP,

Last night [Wed.] around 3:30 am, I heard 5 gun shots followed by some screams on N St. NW between 7th and 6th streets. Shortly afterwards, approximately 10 cop cars, an ambulance, and a fire truck showed up on the scene. I haven’t seen anything about it today. Anyone know what happened?”

MPD writes:

“Early this morning [Thurs.] a 5th District Officer observed an individual shoot from a vehicle in the 2300 block of New York Ave, NE. The officer pursued the vehicle in to the 3rdDistrict, where the occupants bailed out of the vehicle in the area of 6th and M St, NW. After a short foot pursuit officers apprehended three suspects and recovered two firearms and ammunition.

At approximately 3:40 am an individual was in the 600 block of N St, NW when a dark colored vehicle pulled in the block and began shooting at him. The victim received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

If anyone has any information regarding this incident please contact MPD at 202 727-9099.”

Keeping with fun FQotD for the month of August:

“Dear PoPville,

I was hoping that the PoP community would be a good place to survey people on where they like to get delivery from? I love going out to DC and trying all the different restaurants here, but when it comes to getting good delivery for a lazy evening, I have few ideas. I live in the Columbia Heights area and my boyfriend is in Adams Morgan, so I’m particularly interested in restaurants that would deliver to those areas. Some of my favorites are DC Noodles, Rice and Meiwah, but there just have to be more! And I’m not talking the standard Manny & Olga’s Pizza delivery. Any suggestions out there? And I know many places do takeout, but I’m really looking for delivery ideas.”

We talked about good pizza delivery options here. But I’d also be curious to hear about other delivery options. In addition to the name of the restaurant please also say what neighborhood(s) they deliver to. I’ve been pretty happy with Sala Thai delivery to Petworth.

So for the Friday Question of the Day – what’s your favorite delivery option?

“Dear PoP,

I only recently discovered Jam Down Cafe on Georgia Ave & Lamont. It’s a Jamaican restaurant/juicebar that serves the greatest juice in the world (mango+guanabana+ginger anyone?) and the couple who own and run it, Mika and Phil, are incredibly friendly and hardworking. Unfortunately, they might have to close soon due to the economic troubles plaguing just about everybody, but they’re trying to make it to September. They’ve put so much love and time into the place, and the food is seriously delicious. Wanted to alert your readers to this great spot to see if we can try to convince them to stick around, they’re part of what makes the neighborhood great!”

Jam Down opened up back in Aug. ’09. You can see their menu here.
