The Craigslist ad says:

“Furnished with utilities + wifi access included! Spacious basement studio in fabulous location, steps off Pennsylvania on E street between Eastern Market and Safeway. 4 blocks to 2 metros, several buses, great restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, and more. Walk or bike or bus down Penn to the Capitol or Smithsonian or federal agencies. Close to Canadian Embassy and Union Station. Well-lit neighborhood where everyone knows each other, across from elementary school, with alarm system on house. Available space is the entire FINISHED FURNISHED BASEMENT. Separate entrance, separate bathroom (recently renovated), separate cooking space (microwave, stovetop, fridge, no oven), shared washer/dryer, separate exit to fenced yard. No pets, no smoking, no drugs.”

$1095 sound right?

With just that strange picture and at that price it sounds fishy. Other clues would include “cooking space” instead of “kitchen” and the inclusion of “no drugs.” And if it’s across from an elementary school it’s probably on 12th. I’d check it out but wouldn’t have my hopes too high.

i really love the fuscia carpet.

“Close to Canadian Embassy and Union Station.”

The fact that this apartment is close to neither the Canadian Embassy or Union Station is strange enough. But I’m also struggling to come up with ANY neighborhood where such a claim could be made.

    • Caroline

I once offered to give someone a ride home because she claimed to live near Union Station. I should have asked for clarification because it ended up being something like 49th Street NE.

  • GDopplerXT

Weird. Why do they specifically mention the Canadian Embassy? Aren’t there also about a thousand other things in and around the Capitol that people would want to be close to?

Also that’s kind of a strange looking room from that picture.

Sounds about right to me…if you want to live in a room where someone has definitely been murdered

    • joker

Hahahaha…I was just thinking as I looked at that picture, that I had seen that room on an episode of Law and Order.

  • J

    No oven, no drugs? RIPOFF

Why is the picture of the James O’Keefe’s porno boat cabin?

  • e

I looked at this place last year. It’s legit, but the “shared laundry” means that the people who live upstairs come through your room to get to the laundry.

    • GDopplerXT

So you’re basically just living in someone’s basement, not in a separate unit. I don’t think that should cost more than $1000 anywhere in this city.

    • My Laundrette

If the ‘shared laundry’ situation is as you describe, that is a total deal breaker. I wonder why these people would even try to rent a space where they can’t even guarantee their lessee basic adult privacy. Should even qualify for rental in my opinion.

If I was in my 20s again I would take this place. It would be a better deal if it came with pets and drugs?

  • Caroline

Why did they go to the trouble of rennovating the bathroom but not tear down that creepy wood paneling?

    • Angry Parakeet

Duh, because there is something even creepier behind it!

  • Florista

  • Clarisse

That’s not a picture, that’s the view of the Potomac! :)

  • Clarisse

    Bathroom renovation = emptying bucket

  • H Street Landlord

Truly awful. Terrible living space, at least from the picture.

  • Bloomingdalian

    Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay-ted it!

  • Erik

The amount of drugs required to make me want to live in that place automatically disqualifies me from renting it.
