Honor the past, present and future of Southwest DC at Crossing the Street: SW Is… – a performance and community event celebrating the bold and powerful voices of SW!
SW Is… is the culmination of Crossing the Street, a District-wide creative placemaking initiative sponsored by the DC Office of Planning. The project empowers residents of rapidly changing neighborhoods to respond to the development around them through the arts. YPT is the Crossing the Street curator for SW, and has been working with local artists and community leaders to write theatrical pieces addressing issues that affect the neighborhood. On Saturday, October 22, professional actors and community members will bring those pieces to life!
Join YPT for performances, art and family fun in the lot near 4th & I St. SW (behind the Safeway complex). The main event will run from 12-3pm, followed by a community celebration in The Lot SW! Free and open to the public!
Join Young Playwrights’ Theater TONIGHT to celebrate our 21st year of arts education programming and professional performances!
6pm – 9pm
Lou’s City Bar, 1400 Irving Street NW
THE DEAL: Donate $5 to YPT at the door, and enjoy an extended Happy Hour until 9pm! Happy Hour includes select draft beers, house wines and rail drinks for $5 each.
THE CAUSE: Young Playwrights’ Theater inspires young people to realize the power of their own voices. By teaching students to express themselves through the art of playwriting, YPT develops students’ language skills, and empowers them with the creativity, confidence and critical thinking skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.
Please note that this event is only open for patrons over age 21. We hope to see you tonight!
Young Playwrights’ Theater (YPT) seeks young people to participate in our award-winning Young Playwrights’ Workshop! YPT is an arts education nonprofit based in Columbia Heights, and we have been serving students throughout the DC area for over 20 years.
The Young Playwrights’ Workshop is YPT’s award-winning student theater ensemble for students in grades 8-12. The group meets every Wednesday afternoon from 4:15 – 5:45 pm (except for holidays). Over the course of the school year, students will:
– Learn about theater and creative writing
– Write and perform their own original play, which will be presented as a part of the 2016 Source Festival on June 13
– Make friends from other schools and neighborhoods
– Earn community service and/or internship hours
– Earn a stipend of up to $200
The Workshop’s first meeting will be on Wednesday, October 7. All meetings take place in YPT’s office at the Josephine Butler Parks Center (2437 15th Street NW, Third Floor, Washington, DC 20009).
To sign up or ask any questions, please email Farah Harris at [email protected] or call YPT’s office at 202-387-9173.
