  • Rave: Thank you to everyone who came to the inaugural Wine & Bitch last night! I hope you enjoyed yourselves, and I plan to host another one in mid to late March for those who are interested (somewhere different, this time).

Rave: I got to work at a reasonable time (mostly because I didn’t UberPOOL this morning)

Rant: Uber drivers who are more ass-holier than normal (not this morning’s, but yesterday I had some horrible people). Is this a new thing they’re trying? Almost made me long to take a DC taxi instead. Almost.

Rave: Going to see a fun band tonight!

  • Rave: SiriusXM has a channel on which they claim to play old-school punk in the mornings. It’s usually crap (think Green Day) but this morning I turned it on just after dropping my kids off and California Über Alles had just started. Almost broke my steering wheel doing the drum bit at the end.
    .
    Rant: Blink 182 was next.

    • Gotta love how they are singing about how awful Jerry Brown is….

      • Yeah, they changed it to Reagan in the early 80s, but the original is still the best. Jello endorsed Jerry Brown when he ran for governor in 2010, showing that times do change.

  • Rant: Couldn’t make it to Wine & Bitch last night because I’m still a germy gross mess. But also, I didn’t really have anything to whine or bitch about, or at least, nothing new. But I missed seeing everyone there….
Rave: On the plus side, I went home, ate some dinner, watched some DVR-ed shows, and was in my bed and out like a light by 9 p.m. Sleep seems to be key in getting over anything.
    Rant: Still gross and stuffy.
Rave: Going to go to yoga tonight anyway – maybe all that moving will get my sinuses unstuck!

  • Revel: had a great time out last night at wine and bitching. It’s nice to finally meet people you’ve been talking to in the comments for a while.
?: day without immigrants is a day without students here. 1/3 of my class is out
Rant: sad it coincides with our field trip but protesting isn’t always convenient

    • Odd, I know we are in different parts of MD, but my daughter also has a field trip today and a little less than a third of her class was out for the no immigrant day!

  • skj84

Rave: Fun time at Wine and Bitch yesterday! It was great seeing everyone, and was pretty cathartic. I realize I really just need to make more of an effort to meet guys. I can’t just hope they come to me.
Rave: I remembered to bring breakfast and lunch to work this morning! I made a tasty protein smoothie, and eggs/toast for breakfast, and my leftover steak for lunch.
Rant: I was a bit too slow moving with my breakfast prep and missed the bus. I guess I need to get up a bit earlier if I’m going to make breakfast before work. Or make it the night before.

  • Cool: I noticed this morning that newer model Mercedes have a feature that puts a red warning triangle inside the right-side mirror when there’s someone in the blind spot. I sped up and fell back a couple of times to watch it in action.
Worry: That people will forget how to look over their shoulders before merging, the same way GPS made them lose all sense of direction.
Rave: Remembered to grab my lunch on the way out the door, so I’m all set to spend NO money in solidarity with immigrants today.
Whaaa: It was bright and sunny and SNOWING for part of my walk. Did not see a snowbow, though.

    • You were driving a Mercedes? Nifty!

      • Ha! No, we were *next to* a mercedes. But the VW holds her own. No shame in her game.
Although I did have a beast of a MB years ago. It was a vintage wide-body diesel. I bought it thinking it would be quirky, but it was a two-ton PITA.

        • I drove the new Car-2-Go Mercedes last weekend – it was fine, and had some nice features, but the engine didn’t strike me as anything impressive. Not the best advertisement for the brand.

        • That’s even more awesome. Glad to hear the VW continues to hold her own. Such a fun car.

  • Rave: It was great to see so many people last night and meet some new people too! We should do that more often!
    .
Rant: Migraine. It must be the weather.
    .
Rave: SO looking forward to this weekend.

  • Oh, forgot a question: Talking to a teenaged girl last night, I learned that a way to get a guy’s attention without putting yourself “out there” is to text him something sexy and then immediately follow up with “sorry, that wasn’t for you”.
Is this a thing that the youngsters are doing?? Does it work??

    • Um. That sounds a little nutty. I have never heard of this. Not like I’m a youngster (but I probably am a baby compared to most people here).

    • That’s kind of hilarious. But probably only because my daughter is far too young to be engaging in those kind of shenanigans.

    • Sounds like something a teenager would do. Surely would not advise that for an adult ESPECIALLY given you already have the number to text the person so you can just communicate in an adult way how you feel

    • I’ve heard of people, not necessarily youngsters, doing things like this. I have a friend that was saying her gf’s mom does this to her sometimes. She said she will text her something random and then follow right back up with, oh sorry meant to send that to someone else! She said she thinks it’s to get her attention. Using it in the way you described sounds like an even bigger mind f*ck. I could see it working because the guy would be like oh no, she’s texting other guys sexy stuff?

    • I’m not young so I don’t know for sure, but this sounds very much like something that teens (or even some young adults) would do. Striving for attention but remaining aloof is a pretty standard flirtation technique that I remember from my younger days.

    • DCLadyinWaiting

My friends and I used to do this in college… granted I graduated university in 2014, but it was still a thing then. With most of us (including myself) having serious relationships now, we don’t do it anymore, but it probably had 95% return rate of response and 80% follow up of a “What are you up to tonight?” type comment.

      • Ok, so it works! I wonder what the cutoff age is.

        • That One Guy

When you send text message to the wrong people by mistake, and the other person responds that it happens and really means it in an understanding sort of way?
          .
Is this sort of like the male equivalent of sending a dick pic? It’s a little more subtle but still an attention grab, no?

          • DCLadyinWaiting

We used to do this entirely on purpose as a way to get a guy’s attention (particularly if he had been a consistent roster member and was ignoring you lately). Texts could be a sexy picture, but more often than not, it was just something like “Oh yeah? I just got out of the shower and am dripping wet ;)” when you haven’t talked to the guy in at least a day or two. About two seconds later, you send a second text saying “Oops! Wrong person!” or “Sorry! Not meant for you!”

As previously mentioned, it had a good return rate and is entirely an attention grab.

          • Honestly, I find this fairly appalling.
(Then again, this could be why me and dating don’t work out well. But one really shouldn’t need an attention grab for anyone who values you, in my opinion. That’s an important lesson to learn.)

          • I agree with FridayGirl. But what DCLady is describing doesn’t sound like dating. “Consistent roster member” means hook up to me. Of course in college, and even after sometimes those situations turn into relationships.

          • Right there with ya, FridayGirl – all of these types of “attention grabs” that men and women do while trying to date and/or hook up I find pretty appalling. And sure, maybe that’s why a relationship has eluded me, because I won’t play those games and don’t go for people who do. But I’m ok with that.

  • I feel bad I couldn’t make it to the Wine & Bitch last night – hope to make the next go around!

I need to take a mental health day today and completely check out from the news. I get so upset comparing coverage from the NYT and Fox News perspectives — how are we ever going to get on the same page as a country if we can no longer agree on basic facts??

  • Rave: 3 Day Weekend
Rave: Going to New York to eat all the foods and then djing in brookyln
Rant: Filling out Short Term Disability forms for work cuz i’m getting my tonsils out in a week.

  • Rave: An emotional support dog on the metro this morning was making puppy eyes at Baby Artie, who returned the love. I had a feeling they would be good friends if fate allowed.
Rant: My kid’s obsession with cats and dogs is lovely (we are animal people), but he’s not yet old enough to understand the concept of gentle. I have to run a lot of interference between him and the grumpy senior kitty.
Rave: Lovely unexpected snow this morning.

  • Rave – Jim Havard’s pictures
Rave – someone brought chocolate cake to work
Rave – someone at work newly appreciates my input
    Rave – 4 day weekend!
Rant- my sweetie is away so it’s four days of chipping paint.

    • And one more rave- the overhead light bouncing off a cd in my trash can is dispersing into rainbows. I have personal rainbows at my desk.

  • Rant: Feeling cranky.
Rave: Slept better last night–at least mostly.
    Rant: Still kind of tired.
Rave/rant: Excited to see that Sara Bareilles is going to be playing the lead in The Waitress for 10 weeks, but I’m not sure we can plan a getaway in that time frame to go see it. Hrm.

  • Rant; Can not shake this head cold, does anyone anywhere have a surefire over the counter medicine that truly works? Cannot stop coughing, -any help?
Rave: Upcoming weekend to do nothing but rest and of course clean, clean, clean
Rave: Seeing friends in various local locations

    • For your cold:
      1. Buy some Umcka – will shorten the duration of your cold. Comes in various forms – I like the packets of powder you mix with hot water and drink like tea, because drinking hot liquids is good for a cold anyway. It’s an herbal thing.
      2. Buy a nasal irrigator bottle – like Nasopure – which comes with packets for making saline – and rinse out your sinuses a few times a day.
      3. Put hydrogen peroxide 3% solution in your ears, one side at a time, and let it bubble for a few minutes.
      4. Buy a cough syrup with guaifenesin – that’s the only mucus thinner out there in over the counter remedies. I like the one made by Naturade, which contains other herbs in addition to the guaifenesin, which the more well-known cough syrups do not.
      Feel better soon!

    • I read somewhere that pineapple juice helps a cough. Try it, report back!
OTC cough meds are placebos, or only effective due to the alcohol, and you can get that cheaper elsewhere. Codeine actually works.
And Afrin. If you dry up your nose, you’ll have less post-nasal drip irritating your throat. But you can only use Afrin for three days, or you’ll become dependent.

      • Pineapple definitely works for my always re-occuring arthritis but somehow I do think it’ll work for the coughing spasms I’m now experiencing. Afrin’s a hard one to find not may still carry it, i’ll keep checking, thanks.

        • Walgreens carries Afrin (it is one of the few things I can use when I get a cold because I am nursing). I second the use of Mucinex and the neti-pot. Also, drink a ton of water. Hot tea with lemon, honey, and a splash of bourbon before bed is also my homemade remedy.

    • Mucinex-D helps me. It has the same decongestant as sudafed, so you have to get it from the pharmacy counter. If you are congested or have post-nasal drip, it will help dry you out. And drink lots of liquids.

      • *NOTE: if you have heart rate / arrhythmia issues, please check with your doctor prior to using Anything-D or Sudafed! A number of years ago, I accidentally bought a box of Claritin-D instead of regular Claritin, and whooooo boy! My heart was RACING just walking across a room – I finally looked at the box and saw that I had taken what amounted to 8 sudafed tablets in one shot! I’m jealous of the folks who can take sudafed, I can only occasionally take the fake stuff (phenylephrine) and even that makes me feel sick and jittery!

        • I have taken sudafed because I used to have really bad sinus issues — and years and years later (as in a couple months ago) someone FINALLY told me that it was what was making my heart race! Geez. No more for me. Regular mucinex still helps.

  • That One Guy

Rant: Kept taking off my glasses to wipe them because my monitor looked hazy then I realized that it was my eyes that were problem. -_-#
Rave: Purple suede shoes… (it sounds funnier if you use a James Brown voice to say it).

  • Rave: Belated Valentine’s Day dinner last night. Very tasty, and his friend runs the restaurant and got us complimentary dessert and roses. 🙂
Rave: Galentine’s Day with a couple good girlfriends on Tuesday was also lovely. Bon Chon, wine, and the Great British Bake Off.
Rant: Most of my office is out on vacation/work travel today and I really just want to be at home…

Rant: 1st FULL week back in the office. (How is it not Friday?)
Rave: The list of restaurants participating in “A Day without immigrants”. Just read the full list in the Washington Post and cried real tears. I love the unity in DC right now.
Rave: I made it through the worst 6 weeks in recent history and I’m still alive. (Grandmothers funeral, car broken into, work briefcase stolen, completely cut ties with me ex) I MADE IT!

  • Rave: To the lovely SinSA for organizing last night’s event. Y’all are awesome.
Rave: Lovely unexpected snowflakes this morning.
    Rave: It’s Friday eve.

Rave: because it started with an early morning trip to the National Museum of African American History and Culture!

  • Wife agreed with going to couples counseling, so I guess that’s a step in the right direction. Thanks for your suggestions yesterday. It’s a bit hard to hear, but important.

  • Rave: buying a super cute romper tonight now that it’s on sale. I have no romper shame
Rave: lovely time at Wine and Bitch last night
Rant: forgot to put my lunch in the fridge, warm salad here I come. Gross
Rave: my dad is an adorable texter. For a guy who doesn’t know how to type and got an email address two years ago (solely for playing fantasy football) he’s really good at it and I find we talk a lot more than we did before.

    • Additional Rave: my coworker, who has an updated gandpa style (this is a great thing IMO and includes a lot of shawl collar sweaters), just asked me whether I have a stylist or great taste. You, sir, are gentleman and excellent compliment-er.

      • I love this. Sounds like the best kind of coworker to have around!

Agreed on your last rave. I talk to both parents all the time via text.

    • houseintherear

My dad texts using Siri and his texts usually read: “Tell her that Syracuse is playing tonight…” or “Tell her I said hello.” LOL good heavens.

  • Rave: Actually staying busy today. It’s a nice change of pace.
RANT: Found out I owe $588 for the anesthesia for my surgery, as we haven’t hit the deductible yet. WTH???
Rave: As a sort-of aspiring photographer, one of my photos might be used on an invitation for work! Woot!
Rave: Super upset about this insurance payment (or non-payment) and REALLY want to get a giant slice of pizza to eat my feelings…but NOT GONNA DO IT! Going to save my money and my calories and eat the mostly healthy lunch I have brought. Yay me.
