Graffiti in Meridian Hill park

Ed. Note: Graffiti intentionally whited out to limit exposure

“Dear PoPville,

The parks department has been doing a great job keeping Meridian Hill Park looking good this year. It’s so disappointing to see that vandalism with graffiti that is starting to show up. Overall it feels like this type of vandalism is on the rise again in DC. Do you know what if anything the DC police are doing about this?”

Are others noting a rise in graffiti around town?

Ed. Note: Park Police are in charge of preventing crime in the park not MPD (DC) police.

  • Back to the 70s/80s we go… gentrification is officially done.

    • There was madness in any direction, at any hour. If not across the Bay, then up the Golden Gate or down 101 to Los Altos or La Honda. . . . You could strike sparks anywhere. There was a fantastic universal sense that whatever we were doing was right, that we were winning. . . .

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. . . .

So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark—that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back.”

    • Sorry, but this is new. DC never had a graffiti problem on its federal land, like Meridian Hill Park, or on its bridges like the Key Bridge. This new wave of graffiti artists are a different breed–including a lot of college students.

  • You know you’ve been spending too much time with your kids when the first thing you think of when you see that picture is Frozen and “do you wanna build a snowman???”….

  • LOL. i thought maybe it was penises that were whited out. shows where my mind is…..

  • After living in Columbia Heights for 3 years and seeing many incidents of graffiti vandalism, I was always happy (and a bit surprised) the HUGE mural/painting around the Harriet Tubman soccer field always remained in pristine condition. I was pretty bummed and pissed a few months back when some a**clown decided it was finally time to tag it.

  • I noticed these tags the other day – pissed me off. The punishment for this kind of adult doodling should be that the tag gets permanently branded (not tattooed, branded) on perpetrator’s forehead – since they want the whole world to see their tags anyways, what better way to display it.

  • Yes, I live in the area and my roof deck has gotten graffitied twice this month. Pretty brazen of this person or persons to essentially come into my front yard and vandalize it.

  • The Park Police aren’t going to do anything about it. They’re too busy harassing people who commit petty crimes that do not harm property or other people.

    • One could argue that the park police doing more to deter people from drinking/smoking pot in MHP could reduce graffiti by re-establishing proper conduct.

  • I blame it on summer.. people are bored and running wild!

  • a TON of graffiti recently – in my neighborhood, it’s been being painted over and tagged again that night

  • There is a tag on my building (mews?) in Lanier Heights. It’s kind of a cute image of a person and a flower, but really…couldn’t they have just drawn it on a piece of paper and not brick facing the street? :/

  • There’s a big increase in graffiti in Mt. Pleasant this summer. The stone wall that curves down Adams Mill near Harvard Towers has been hit many times. It’s also showing up on back yard fences and walls. And, as we all know, the new Subway restaurant is hit all the time.

  • This sucks. I notice a lot of graffiti on W Street leading up to the park too, but it doesn’t bother me that much. But don’t do it in the park itself!

  • What is the snowman blocked word starting with “M”?
Is it in Spanish? Can’t picture a profanity in English starting with M that’s that short…

  • I’ve seen a huge increase around the city lately. It’s getting really tiresome dealing with daily quality of life problems like this. Litter too.

  • Its the Ferguson effect. Youths think they are venting their angry with the tacit approval of their leaders (Holder, DeBlasio.Sharpton,e.t.c.)

  • What’s missing from this discussion is this is MS-13 gang tagging and could mean even more violence coming to Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan. My how I don’t miss the 1700 block of Columbia Rd!

    • Are you sure? If so that’s pretty scary. They had a pretty strong presence here a number of years back, I hope there isn’t a resurgence.

      • Am I 100% sure? No. But given that the tags start with an M and have 3-blanks after them leads one to believe its gang tagging. They also had a huge tag a few years back near the water features. I’m sure this is prime turf between rival gangs for the drug trade.

  • The most recent graffiti in my neighborhood (Columbia Heights) is all for Salvadoran gangs (Norteno, MS-13, etc.). I’ve been here 10 years. It is definitely getting worse.
At the same time we have a Councilmember – Nadeau – that proudly brags about her travels to El Salvador. If I were a MS-13 gang member I would be delighted to have representation (although I couldn’t legally vote for her) that championed my people (that also couldn’t vote for her), the quality of life for her salary paying and tax paying constituents be damned.

  • Do your part and call the city #311 to request graffiti removal (or report any matter that needs attention). It may take a few calls but sooner or later they’ll send the crew out to do their magic. I’m in SW and our ‘purple’ tunnel (at 2nd & E St SW) is always graffiti magnet, even after it’s been all removed, less than a few wks it starts all over.

  • I’m guessing that a good, old fashioned hanging cage is considered cruel and unusual punishment if the police were to catch the vandals.

  • Lots, LOTS, of graffiti in Shaw and Logan. DC comes out to remove and a week later there are new tags. We always had some, but the last 3-6 months have been insane.

Download the DC 311 app and report it. If you’re really ambitious, take a photo tour of the graffiti and send to your councilmember. (and dc 311 too for cleanup) .
