Caribou Coffee Closes at 17th and Penn, will Reopen as Peet’s Coffee & Tea in a Month

17th and Pennsylvania Ave, NW

The Caribou Coffee located by the White House at 17th and Pennsylvania Ave, NW closed on Sunday:

They’ll reopen as Peet’s Coffee & Tea in about a month:

In December we noted the Logan Circle Caribou had closed and would reopen as Peet’s in about three months.

14th and Rhode Island Avenue, NW

At that time an employee said they’d use the space as a training spot for all the Peet’s DC employees. Looks like that is indeed the case:

  • This is ALL kinds of exciting!! #BayAreaNative

  • The manager of the Caribou that I go to told me that they will all be converting to Peet’s.

  • The excitement level seems a bit perplexing to me, when you consider that they’re owned by the same company. I wouldn’t be too surprised if the product was identical underneath. Is Peet’s really that much better than Caribou? I’ve always considered them both a step below Starbucks, but still pretty good.

    • Some people won’t like it. Their French roast has more char than Starbucks, but the coffee is better than the dishwater that Caribou served. If the bakery stuff is like what they have on the West Coast, it’ll be a big improvement over the cardboard-y stuff Caribou sold.

      • I would have gone there more often, but a small coffee there is more expensive than at Starbucks. Wonder if the price will remain the same.

      • Don’t know about their coffee, but I think Caribou’s iced tea is worlds better than Starbucks. I hope they keep the tea the same at least!

  • Being from Minnesota, I’ll miss the Caribou.

Living on 14th Street, can you please just reopen? I miss a coffee hangout!

  • Peet’s is definitely better quality than both Caribou and Starbucks. For instance, no automated espresso machines, all drinks are made individually. Assuming they maintain the same level of quality as the West Coast stores, this is a big win for DC coffee drinkers when it comes to coffee chains.

  • I was recommended this blog by my cousin. I’m
not sure whether this post is written by him as no
one else know such detailed about my difficulty.
    You are wonderful! Thanks!
