New Wine Bar Coming to U Street Will Offer American/Italian Cuisine Instead of Mexican

1301 U Street, NW

A few weeks ago we learned a new wine bar serving Mexican food would be replacing U Scream Ice Cream at 1301 U St, NW. I’d never heard of a wine bar focusing on Mexican cuisine, alas, the liquor license application has been changed:

“**Food will be American /Italian cuisine to include, salads, Panini, small plates, charcuterie and cheeses. Total Load: 61, Seats Inside: 36, Summer Garden Seats: 35.”

Sounds pretty much exactly like Maple. Hopefully the wine is better than what Dickson offers, which is mostly awful (although strangely their beer and cocktail selections are good).

    • Maple started serving Mexican food? I was just there last week and swore it had a pretty Italian bent to it…

  • They lost me at small plates….

  • If one more small plates place opens around here, I’m slitting my wrists.

  • I actually talked to the owner the other day (he currently owns U Scream & U Street Wine & Beer next door). He told me that it was never going to be a Mexican restaurant but someone misunderstood his accent when he said “American” and heard “Mexican.” In any event, he has a great selection of wines and beers at the store, so hopefully that bodes well for the selection at the new restaurant.
