Dear PoPville,
This was spray painted on my sidewalk and on the side of the house next door to me (in our alley). I live in a nice part of DuPont so can’t imagine it’s gang related. That being said should I report it? Will the city pressure wash the tag off the sidewalk if I do?
I think this is probably just related to gas lines or water pipes or something like that. I don’t think you need to report it. Does anyone know if the city/utility company will take care of the markings when their work is done?

Awesome running and biking on the Anacostia river walk trail with the completion of the...
Capitol Hill ends at 10th St. So Hill east refers to the streets east of 10th.
Always fun and interesting. It keeps getting better too!
We just got kittens and started going to Atlas Vet on H Street, they are really great!...
The run-down Howard buildings across the street from this new development and along...
I would bet money the white paint is a gang tag, not utilities.
So….was this at 21st and P Street? Thats what it looks like is written there.
The street referred to may not even be in DC. We had 18ST M.C. sprayed in the alley behind our house, and that’s a reference to a street in L.A.
Actually those gangs have a presence in DC.
What makes you so sure? It could possibly be 18th Motorcycle Club or worse – M18.

Exactly. I will never understand why people choose not to acknowledge reality. The harsh reality still exist even if you close your eyes and pretend it doesn’t exist
Thanks for the info! The tag was cleaned up, fortunately, but for a little while they’d left their mark writ large in NoPe.

OP here –
It’s nearby but NOT on 21st. That’s what was weird about it. I know it’s probably just a random tag, but since it was spraypainted on our alley too I was unsure if it was something I could have the city remove or what.
Very odd looking to be a utility marking (the white writing). Probably a gang tag. The red looks like utility markings, but not the white. Why would a utility marking need to write the street name (21st)?
Agreed The red paint is almost certainly utility markings. Depending on what kind of work will be done (if any is), the sidewalk might be ripped up and redone, so taking care of the paint would be a moot point.
The dreaded West End gang repin’ 21st st NW hard as f@#$ in their madras shorts and boat shoes.
they going HAM a head of the election!
There is a fair amount of graffiti in Dupont and it’s all mindless, amateur tags like above. There is large Verizon utility box on my street that gets repainted every few months and within days it’s tagged with more idiotic markings. One of my tenants saw some kids paint boobs on the back of my building. The kids were very young, so I don’t think there is anything gang related. There are more kids messing around with stuff in Dupont than you might think, even on the weekends when they are not walking to/from the local schools. Every time I speak to an officer in the area, they are looking for some kids that did this or that…
Definitely the Van Buren Boys. Pack up and move to the ‘burbs buddy.
Red=electric, blue=water, yellow=gas, orange=phone. Not sure I’ve ever seen white used, especially in this manner. You can always call Miss Utility and ask.
And no, the city/utility do not remove the markings once they are finished with the project. It’s my understanding that the type of paint they use is supposed to wash away after several months. I could be wrong about the type of paint, but I’m not about the city/utility removing it. It’s there till it goes away.
The city (DDOT, I think) is currently using white to mark changes to sidewalk/tree box layout on some sidewalks in Georgetown. But it’s just dashed lines marking corners of boxes, not huge scribbled numbers.
White is what is used to mark where the sign, light post, street light, trash can – whatever – is going to be installed.
Oh, and yeah, it’s supposed to wear away quickly. So no, nobody comes back and scrubs it.
I don’t get it, we all grew up with the Simpsons. What region in the U.S. is naive enough to the concept of vandalism that “gang related” would be the default assumption when they see an example of it?
“we all grew up with the Simpsons.”
No. I was a college graduate before that show began. And I know I am not the oldest person here.
M Street between 14th and 15th has loads of red and white markings all over the street and sidewalks. Crews have been laying new cable around the area for months. Does that stuff ever wear off?
Marking paint is supposed to wash away fairly quickly with enough rainfall, but I have a bunch of yellow gas line markings in front of my house that have been there for well over a year and are probably only down to about 60% of the original. Whatever the city is using sticks around for a while.
The same tag was recently spray painted to a tree on Lincoln Rd NE, located across the street from the Glenwood Cemetery.
Mayan calendar hoopla starting early?
Is everything you see a gang tag? This is more ridiculous than when I went to a training course about identifying whether something was an IED. It got to the point that you could randomly point to anything and say it was an IED.
Never assume it’s non gang related, always be safe
