Dear PoPville,
My 5th year anniversary is coming up and it is the “wood” anniversary. I want to get my husband a new door for our house. I heard there is a great salvage place in Petworth near the metro, but I don’t have any other information besides that. Any thoughts? Any other places that would have a cool solid wood door that is a little more interesting than the Home Depot one we have now?
I know there is a place next to the gas station at Georgia and Upshur but I think those doors are more of the “home depot” variety. I think your best bet would be a place like community forklift. Any other suggestions?

Community Forklift in Bladensburg. They have tons in all sizes and shapes.
The stuff there is usually in terrible shape though. In order to score something ok you have to go every morning and grab it before someone else does.
In order from best to least-best:
1. Second chance in Baltimore
2. Community Forklift
3. Habit Restore
Concur 100%.
Ditto! I love Second Chance – so easy to make a day out of wandering around the different warehouses.
Second Chance in Bmore is worth the drive. A whole warehouse of doors from all eras available.
Depends on your budget. If you have a bit to spend, you should visit my favorite salvage porn site:

Mmmmm….salvage porn.
The door above is a.m.a.z.i.n.g. !
It’s on the 2100 blk of R St NW. Check out the house sometime it awesome all over.
in fact its 2133 R Street google it
I’d second (third/fourth?) Community Forklift. Also, congratulations on your anniversary! My wife and I will be celebrating our 5-year this Saturday on a small lake in Northern PA.
just wondering – is your husband (or you) handy? installing a door, even a brand new in a casement one from home depot, isn’t an easy task.
I’m guessing the über-knowledgeble folks at The Brass Knob in Adams Morgan would have some good ideas.
My husband is handy so I am not too worried. Does anyone know the place in petworth? A neighbor recommended but didn’t know the name. He got his door there and it is neat.
I have been to community forklift and will try again!
I think it’s called Georgia Builders Surplus??? It’s on Georgia, just south of Upshur. Just walked by yesterday and thought they had some unique looking doors.
I’ve been in there but never bought anything. The doors are all new, not used. With that said, they seem to have a good selection, and the guy who works there knows his stuff. Take correct measurements with you.
Installing a door, especially a salvage door that is not pre-hung, is serious business. If your husband can do this he probably has fairly advanced carpentry skills.
If you ever feel like taking a day trip to Richmond, Caravatti’s.
