  • Not inspired design or anything but this is a great price for 2 br near Columbia Heights

  • diploj

    $2K for a basement. I’ll pass.

    • And why don’t you tell us, Mr./Ms. Hoity-Toity, where in NW DC you’ll find a 2 bedroom non basement for this price (and in comparable condition + washer/dryer, etc)?? I challenge you to show me one….

      • Yes the price of 2K is pretty good, but this specific street at this exact intersection (Girard between 13th and 14th) is really a bad area.

And that’s not just me being paranoid. I had a friend that lived on that block a few years back. And there’s a reason there’s a crime camera on that corner and constantly cops there.

Good luck ever enjoying that terrace.

        • I almost put an offer in on a condo located two houses down but walked around at night and decided it wasn’t worth it.

        • It’s actually between 14th and 15th. I lived there for a year and a half and had no problems. I was on the patio all the time.

        • 2006/2007 when the Girard Street gang was active (btwn 14th & 15th), yes, it was dangerous. Since about late 2009, it’s been pretty safe, cops getting called out towards the 14th Street intersection for your standard domestic disputes. I mean, your car might get broken into on the street (ask a cop if the crime camera might have any evidence and he’ll probably laugh at you), but the crime’s not too bad here compared to the rest of Columbia Heights, in my opinion.

          • And in August of 2009 an employee at Dunkin Donuts on the corner of 14th and Girard was shot and killed in a driveby

So sure, no killings since 2009.

But from 8/9/11 to today- 56% increase in robberies without guns within 1,000 feet of this address. And 30% total violent crime increase.

Total crimes reported within 1,000 of this address this year is 195. (up 25% from last year).

With 12 total crimes happening on this street (Girard between 14th and 15th). 5 of those 12 being violent (4 Assaults with a deadly weapon and 1 robbery without a gun crime).

      • is it stuck up/snobby to demand that the $2k/month one pays for rent get you more than a dank tile-floored basement to live in? its definitely possible to find a 2BR in NW that is above ground and less expensive. you won’t be anywhere near a metro, but so it goes. i don’t get this hoity-toity comment at all.

  • I lived on that street for years and never had a problem. Yes, there may be some people hanging out, but I’d much rather walk down/live on Girard than Fairmont, despite Fairmont having better lighting. I think that the price is a great deal for that amount of space. And the place seems to have pretty good light for a basement.

  • Is having a full-sized, in-unit washer and dryer really a “rarely available” amenity? I’ve lived in a group house and two apartments in DC, none of them super-fancy, and I’ve always had W/D in unit.

  • seems like a good deal to me!

that block is a little sketchy but not enough to deter from renting there.
