Dear PoPville,
We are hosting a baby shower for a wonderful friend who has decided that instead of receiving gifts she would like to collect donations (clothing, diapers, etc) for a local women’s/children shelter in the area. Does anyone have any suggestions for worthy causes in the area we could contact?
Many Thanks!

To be fair you do have to take in the 6 or 7 years since babe's closed. 2021 is more...
Awesome running and biking on the Anacostia river walk trail with the completion of the...
Capitol Hill ends at 10th St. So Hill east refers to the streets east of 10th.
Always fun and interesting. It keeps getting better too!
We just got kittens and started going to Atlas Vet on H Street, they are really great!...
My Sister’s Place (www.mysistersplacedc.org). They provide community outreach, emergency shelter, and transitional-to-permanent housing for women and children fleeing domestic violence.
I believe there is a charity called Martha’s Closet on 14th St NW that would be great for this.
Martha’s table on 14th is a great women’s shelter. Catholic Charities has a program where they place mentally handicapped and abuse survivors in homes they may need items as well.
House of Ruth is another great option
I donated 1/2 my closet to Polaris Project (http://www.polarisproject.org/) a few months ago. They help survivors of human trafficking.

I would recommend donating to St. Ann’s, if you don’t mind the religious affiliation. They have a teen mothers program that is wonderful, but in need of lots of donations.

Love St. Ann’s.
Check out A Wider Circle (http://www.awidercircle.org/foundingstory.html).
Great organization that helps women and children in the area. Plus, if you have furniture to donate, you can arrange a time for them to pick it up.
+1 Wider Circle is amazing. They use donated baby items to give showers to teen moms who complete their parenting classes. Great organization!!
the DC Diaper Bank would be perfect. Also, Bright Beginnings often looks for gift cards and household items for the parents of their students. Both are great organizations.
We hosted a diaper drive for the DC Diaper Bank. They donate diapers to families in need in DC. http://www.dcdiaperbank.org/
The healthy babies project is a local non-profit that connects at risk pregnant women and families to support services and health care. http://www.healthybabiesproject.org/services/
FYI, for the guys out there: Martha’s Table/Martha’s Outfitters at 14th and W is also very much in need of men’s clothing.
I don’t have a suggestion, but that is a great idea for a baby shower!
+1!
DASH- The District Alliance for Safe Housing provides shelter to women and their children who are escaping situations of domestic abuse. http://www.dashdc.org/
The N Street Women’s shelter at 13/N NW – House of Ruth – and Calvary’s Women’s Services at 5/E NW – Great idea!!
+1 on N Street Village
Doorways for Women & Families (www.doorwaysva.org) provides shelter and resources for women and families dealing with homelessness and/or domestic violence. Great organization and I’ve seen first hand how far donations really go.
Please consider DC SAFE, which provides shelter and emergency care for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence.

The House of Ruth is a wonderful shelter.
Contact Greg Chudy gchudy@some.org. So Others Might Eat (SOME) is a great, well run organization. They have many services including housing for homeless families.
I wish everyone were like this!
