From a press release:

Nadeau – Furniture with a Soul, an importer of stylish handmade furnishings, is pleased to announce the opening of its first Alexandria location near the heart of Washington DC’s national mall and downtown district. The 6,100-square-foot showroom holds a wide selection of hardwood pieces that have been hand-painted, carved and stained by local craftsmen in India and Indonesia. Nadeau’s unique looks have kept loyal customers coming back to its 16 other retail locations for almost 20 years.

We will also be hosting a grand opening celebration, open to the public, on Saturday, February 18 between 10am and 6pm! Stop by any time for some wine and cheese, browse our unique furniture and meet the store manager, Daniel Cavanaugh. Regular store hours are Monday through Saturday, 10am to 6pm; Sunday, noon to 5pm. We look forward to meeting you.

5710 A & B, General Washington Dr, Alexandria, VA 22312

  • You lost me at “Alexandria.”

I’m always amused when I read posts like this one. As someone who has lived on both sides of the river, I think that any location inside the Beltway and accessible by Metro is “close enough”. I could understand grousing about postings about Baltimore or Richmond, and even Gaithersburg or Vienna are too far, but when you complain about a location that was part of DC’s original square, it feels like a real stretch.

A Virginia post? Please tell me this post isn’t a harbinger of things to come.

  • ditto both responses.

Also, “Alexandria location near the heart of Washington DC’s national mall and downtown district…” Compared to what, China?

  • Anonymous-est

Yes, and it is amazing. And I have been waiting for the nearest location (in VA) to open. Thanks for posting this.

Given that both rosewood and mahogany are wildly over-harvested in a number of places, I’d like to see a little documentation regarding sustainability practices before granting them the “Furniture With Souls” title.

Not to get all vegan about it or anything.

Yes, Nadu used to have a warehouse behind the post office just off Bladensburg Rd, NE. That outfit moved to NJ. Lots of imports from Malaysia, Indonesia, and China were beautiful and really reasonably priced. But you can often find the same stuff (though not in the quantity of their new warehouse) at Eastern Market.

  • NOLA

They have a nice store in New Orleans. Very well priced imported wooden furniture. Constantly receiving new shipments

  • D

Yep, let me know when they move to the district.

Alexandria was once part of DC, last time being after it was captured during the Civil War.

  • I have enough trouble with my own soul. I can’t deal with angsty furniture as well.

  • PetworthRes

Buying furniture from Indonesia is a great thing to do if you love to support illegal logging…I wouldn’t buy anything from here. Buy furniture made with wood from countries that manage their forests responsibly!
