Saki to Expand Into District Lounge & Grille in Adams Morgan

This is an interesting development. Looks like District Lounge & Grille will be closing and Saki will be expanding into the space. From a Saki liquor license application/change:

“Expand the licensed premises to include the entire building at 2477 18th Street, N.W. This expansion will include the space at 2473 18th Street, N.W. which is currently occupied by District Lounge & Grille which will cease to operate after approval of the expansion. This expansion will add an additional 120 seats for dining space as well as create 25 seats for summer garden space.”

In Sept. ’10 we judged Saki. Were there any fans of District?

  • I believe they are owned by the same group of people…

  • If I recall, District was allegedly the place where that drunk driver got over-served before hitting the women standing at 18th & Florida, killing one of them.

Maybe I’m being cynical, but I wonder if this is an attempt to prospectively limit liability. According to ABRA, District Lounge and Grille is owned by C. Field Group, LLC, while Saki is owned by Colin Unlimited, LLC. The LLCs may be controlled by the same people, but the structure here would seem to make Saki insulated from District Lounge and Grille’s liabilities.

    • I believe you’re correct–District was that place (I guess it is hearsay from the Asylum bartenders, but they know their stuff).

      Good riddance I say.

  • Saki and The District have many of the same partners within their LLCs, if not all of the same.

The issue here is that Saki has a Tavern license (no food provision) and District has a restaurant license (food provision that they have never once come close to meeting). This is a way to avoid dealing with the food requirements.

Not sure about the accident liability angle.
