  • This is tree-of-heaven (Ailanthus altissima), an invasive tree from Asia. It can quickly grow back from a stump or roots that are left behind.

  • I HATE these “trees.” I feel like I’m fighting a losing battle against them in my backyard.

  • I took a course in college on invasive and alien species control. We spent a whole semester pulling, cutting, and tarring these buggers. I hate them so much.

  • it’s actually illegal to have them in the city. you can be fined (not that DC ever really follows through on that). someone should go back and grind the roots out…

  • Seriously, how should I get rid of them? They grow right through the fence that borders my yard and my neighbor’s yard. We try to cut them back, but can’t get at the roots since they’re in the neighbor’s yard (in part) or growing through some old concrete rubble said neighbor has in back. Any non-spooky-chemical ideas if I can’t go after the entire root system?

  • Some times you just gotta use chemicals – a little Roundup will do the trick. Put some on the leaves, or on the cut stub.

  • I’ve had good luck with Vine-X.
