“Dear PoPville,

We are have an unfortunate choice between cancelling our D.C. wedding at total loss or have it anyways for the sake of having it.

Our wedding was originally scheduled for late March, but as the pandemic rapidly spread we sought to change the date. Although initially reluctant, the vendors did allow us to reschedule for a Sunday in September. As we rescheduled only a couple of weeks before the original wedding, we have already paid everything in full. We would have chosen a date in 2021, but an upcoming government move half way around the world with an unclear schedule makes that impossible (don’t worry, we will probably be back in a few years (my husband-to-be fully expects it!)).

It is clear that the pandemic is far from over. Read More

“Dear PoPville,

My fiance and I had to postpone our October wedding to ensure our immunocompromised friends and families wouldn’t be put at risk, and we rescheduled for Memorial Day weekend of next year. We still want to get married, so we decided to take advantage of DC’s online applications for marriage licenses, so we can get married on May 30th, so that our wedding date next year will be our one-year anniversary.

Unfortunately, we submitted our application a month ago and still haven’t heard anything from the DC Marriage Bureau. We tried calling the number listed on their site, and a woman answered, “HELLO?!” and seemed genuinely surprised and very unhappy that we were calling. She dismissively told my fiance to check his spam folder (obviously we already had), said nothing else could be done by her or anyone else to check in on our application, and hung up.

We have just two weeks left to figure this out… would love to hear if anyone else been able to get their license through the online application process during the quarantine?

We reached out to our Councilperson for help, who reached out to Rep. Holmes-Norton, who hasn’t responded. Any other suggestions would be really appreciated! We’ve already had a tough year of loss and challenges (recognizing that we’re not the only ones), and it’d be great to have at least one thing go right – or, rather, for DC’s bureaucracy to do one thing right.”

“Dear PoPville,

How are you celebrating your wedding despite the crisis? Our dream wedding was scheduled for May 2 and will now not be able to take place the way we planned.

Looking for creative solutions or nice ways to celebrate. We’re likely going to go to City Hall and get married on our scheduled wedding day and plan a party for later.”

“Dear PoPville,

I am getting married at AutoShop (Union Market) this fall! Very excited about the venue, but it does not include a space for the bridal party to get ready. Any recommendations for a large-ish suite or space for rent in Washington, DC for bride + 9 bridesmaids, with some natural light?”

“Dear PoPville,

Thought I’d share something we came across while venue searching- did you know that St Francis Hall (a super popular venue!) doesn’t allow gay couples to get married there? There is a lovely person there who’s been trying to fight the policy but hasn’t had any luck. Read More

“Dear PoPville,

I’m having a devil of a time tracking down a wedding photographer on an admittedly tight sub-$1,500 budget. I was wondering if any regular readers knew of a local-ish photographer (we’re in D.C., but our venue is in downtown Baltimore) who would be open to spending a couple hours with me, my fiancée, and our families for an evening this coming September.”
