Well this one has me stumped. As one originally from New York, when I think of New York foods I think of Pizza and bagels. And potato knishes. Mmmm, potato knishes… But I gotta say, I have no idea what a New York Salad bar is. Any ideas?

Cause I wasn’t sure if they were talking about the dog or the dog walker…

The reader says:
It is a “painted sign for a farm and garden supply store”.
The reader then wrote back that my man from And Now, Anacostia found the same sign. Scroll to the bottom and he’s got some better angles. It is a beaut.

This is from the little (soon to be) garden behind Red Rocks and 11th Street. Loved this sign.

Thanks to a reader for sending the word on this cool space. I was lucky enough to run into owner, Lisa Fricano, who told me she was “holding out for something special” on the retail space. She’d love to see it turn into a bookstore or an art space. And what’s super cool is that she is a big fan of the history of the building. She told me it was once a disco in the 70s called “The Jerk”. Too cool. Building on her love of history she has placed historic pictures and items in the front window.
I also love the copper:

You can pick up a postcard of the spot that has a picture from 1931 on the front and a poem about the building on the back:
A hardworking gal in her prime
Times a comeback for 2009,
Her vacant-eyed slumber
Didn’t soften her lumber,
And her penny is now worth a dime.
Much lamented by those who had seen her,
While around her Shaw’s main streets got cleaner,
She drew on reserve,
To renew and preserve,
Her unconventional, centered demeanor.
Lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

This super cool sign is from Barrack’s Row near the Eastern Market Metro stop. Sadly, it’s been half covered up. I think there was a big coca cola sign covered up but I was most intrigued by the Oysters advertisement.

I thought this was a super cool shot from hellomarkers!
Speaking of cabs has anyone else noticed it’s becoming more difficult to get one late night on U Street? It’s starting to remind me of Adams Morgan in that regard. Or maybe I just look to much like a ruffian…

From Shaw.

He found it at “23rd and Penn, SE. Just across the bridge over the Anacostia.” Anyone ever eat there? It kinda reminds me of what those awesome faded signs, we see around town, probably looked like in their prime.
